Winter Quarter... I'm So Done With You: A MODA Blog Playlist

Winter quarter, winter quarter. Where do we begin?

We’ll let the music speak for itself. Check out some tunes curated by MODA Blog to wrap up the quarter—we’re nostalgic, we’re gloomy, we’re over it, we’re understanding ourselves, we’re pumped, and we’re happy we made it.

Dreamer Isioma - I’m So Done With You

Winter quarter isn’t the one who got away: it’s the one you want to forget. I’ve been playing Isioma’s Goodnight Dreamer since its release in late February, and while the songs themselves instill some longing for the spring and summer, this track is just so over it. So am I.

Life don't treat me right
So I go out every night
Dirty dancing like the 80s…

SAINt JHN - Sucks To Be You

The album is titled “while the world was burning,” but my world was freezing. Just started listening to SAINt JHN at the start of this quarter and this is now my favorite PR song at the gym.

“She said she believed in me just keep on goin',” from me, to me. We made it!

James Blake - “Meet You In The Maze”

Sometimes, one’s passion can become all-consuming to the point that one begins to lose sight of oneself and reality as a whole. As Blake sings, “From November through 'til now,” I also had found myself in a “maze” of my own creation –– no longer pursuing my art, but instead becoming the pursued. In those times, it’s good to remind oneself that such endeavors are means to an end –– that end being the derivation of pleasure and excitement in my life and the lives of those around me.

BROCKHAMPTON - “BLEACH”

Perhaps I can owe the recent renaissance this overplayed 2017 song has had in my playlists to the comfort bred by its familiarity and its nostalgic “emo high school boy” charm. Am I listening to “BLEACH” alone at midnight because I too “feel like a monster, feel like a deadhead zombie”? Or am I just listening to it because I’m still in denial of the fact that BROCKHAMPTON is going to break up after Coachella? The world may never know.

Elliott Smith - “Angeles”

Apparently it’s now cool to listen to Elliott Smith. At least according to the trendy TikTok e-people who probably also just discovered “Here Comes The Sun” last week, and Morrissey the week before that. As somebody who has been listening to him from a young age, I feel foolishly possessive of Smith, and what better way to gatekeep than re-listen to his whole catalog so that I can tell everyone that I was “not like other girls” before they were?

Anna

Red House Painters - “Medicine Bottle”

Quintessentially representing winter quarter, this song is gloomy, emotional, and way too long. This slowcore ballad clocking in at 9 minutes and 49 seconds perfectly accompanied my afternoons spent wallowing on my window sill watching the snow.

The Rolling Stones - “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”

This song stood by me to pick myself up from winter moodiness. Even though I was desperate for sunshine, you’re right, Mick Jagger. I can’t always get what I want.

Twin Peaks - “Blue Coupe”

This past winter quarter was also filled with nostalgia and hope for me. The sweet indie sounds of Chicago’s own Twin Peaks often reminded me of my family and friends back home and inspired me to look forward to reuniting with them.

Aurelia

girl in red - “dead girl in the pool.

The perfect mix of catchy but also slightly sardonic, this song really fits the laid back and moody vibe of Winter Quarter. It got me through a lot of winter quarter sadness and is perfect to play in the background.

CORPSE- “agoraphobic”

Unlike his other songs, agoraphobic offers a soft lo-fi beat perfect to vibe to while writing your essays or cracking down on a p-set.

Destress from Finals with This 60s-80s Throwback Playlist

Rock, disco, jazz, funk… all the best genres sprung to life in the sixties, seventies and eighties. Something about the simplicity and the originality of the music, at least personally, always evokes a lot of emotion.

A lot of modern pop is ridden with heavy beats and vocal gymnastics, and while I appreciate this as a form of artistry in and of itself, it takes the emphasis away from the artist. The phrase “beauty in simplicity” is very applicable to the musical world. Most of the old-school classics have a basic tempo, with a melody that is pure and untouched, accompanied by few external elements. Take for example Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven.” It consists solely of a classical guitar and one man’s voice. Bob Dylan was able to move so many people with just his voice and a harmonica (and of course, inspiring lyrics).

About four years ago, I began to compile this sort of music into this playlist, which I have been adding to ever since with songs I pick up from vinyl records, radio stations, etc. Nowadays, the playlist has about 600 songs across five languages all strictly within the 60s to 80s time frame.

You’ll find a complete mixture of songs from the explosion of country music in the 60s, the birth of rock n roll in the 70s, Italian soul, Portuguese Jazz, the incongruousness of bands like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, to the peculiar classics of the 80s. A lot of the artists you’ll be familiar with, but there are some lesser-known artists that I strongly recommend you check out, like Sandie Shaw, Giorgio Gaber, and Smokey Robinson (to name a few). At the same time, some artists are the author of close to thirty songs on the playlist, so you’re bound to stumble across pieces sung by familiar artists that you never knew existed! Happy listening and good luck on your midterms!

The Fall Music Must List

Here are some new tunes to fuel the grind until winter break!

Albums:

The Thrill of it All by Sam Smith: Fans of Smith's pop ballad style will not be disappointed as he returns with another deeply personal album. Songs such as "HIM" and "Pray" delve into Smith's sexuality and offer motivation for facing the world.

Red Pill Blues by Maroon 5: Gravitating away from the ploy of making plushy chart busting pop songs as they have done in recent albums, Red Pill Blues takes liberties in the interest of musicality. "Closure" begins as a fairly standard track but continues with an eight minute jazz interlude and "Denim Jacket" is a clear stand out song for fans of Adam Levine's falsetto and the signature Maroon 5 sound.

reputation by Taylor Swift: While the release of this album had a rough start, the full album completes Swift's transition into pop. Collaboration with Ed Sheeran and Future in "End Game" comes together for a very different sound for Taylor who is finding her place in a good girl gone bad album. "Dancing With Our Hands Tied" is of the strongest songs on her album, complete with a pulsating base drop sprinkled with rhythmic interludes.

Coco (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by Various Artists: This album is actually comprised of three albums and presents an amazing marriage of both Spanish and English by including versions English and Spanish versions of every original song. Additionally, the film is scored by Michael Giacchino, composer of some Disney’s most recognizable scores including Up, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and Inside Out. Even if you do not understand Spanish, this album allows you to listen to the Spanish version, then go back and understand what it means by listening to the English version.

Quick Hit Singles:

Awolnation trades in their booming reliance on digital sound for a mellow acoustic single “Seven Sticks of Dynamite”

Vance Joy’s  “Like Gold” plays to his signature fingerpicking base accompanied by layers of other acoustic sounds.

Eminem “Walk on Water” (feat. Beyonce) demonstrates a beautiful collaboration demanding to be heard with respect to today's political climate.

G-Eazy “The Beautiful & the Damned” feat Zoe Nash. G-Eazy returns to his signature demanding, angsty lyrics and style that gave rise to his 2015 album “When It’s Dark Out”

2000s Nostalgia: A Playlist

Remember when it was 2000 and you were in elementary school? When the most stressful part of your day was a hard tie between nap-time and trying to get the good markers for colouring? Or when you'd groan at having to read a picture book or practice your handwriting for homework? Maybe you remember listening to dialup for what felt like years just to search specific keywords that ads told you to use when you were on AOL or Ask Jeeves. Or trying to co-ordinate all of your limbs to get the perfect radio recording of "Waterfalls" on an old cassette.

Finals Week Playlist: Calming Tunes

As the Winter Quarter comes to a conclusion, you might just need some songs played on repeat to accompany you as you study for that final exam. Recent releases from artists like Ed Sheeran, Khalid, and Calvin Harris are the perfect tunes to listen to during this stressful period (because it doesn't have to be!).

Ed Sheeran ÷ (Deluxe) March 3, 2017

Ed Sheeran's new album is seriously all I've been listening to lately. The steady rhythm and his calming voice in these songs are a great background to my studying!

My favorites from this album are Eraser, Dive, Perfect, Galway Girl, Happier, New Man, and Save Myself.

Khalid American Teen March 3, 2017

Khalid's got such a deep and clear voice that's just so pleasant to listen to. Even some of his upbeat songs sound quite composed, which is just what you want while studying!

My favorites from this album are American Teen, Young Dumb & Broke, Coaster, 8TEEN, and Shot Down.

Here is another song from Khalid that I couldn't stop listening to.

Alina Baraz also has some nice songs that can help you focus.

Calvin Harris Slide ft. Frank Ocean and Migos Feb. 24, 2017

Frank Ocean's nonchalant voice and diction and the mix of paces make this piece incomparable.

X Ambassadors Hoping New Release!

All proceeds of this song go to the ACLU, the American Civil Liberties Union. This is definitely my favorite song at the moment. It's so catchy and makes you feel good to sing along to.

Tunes: Personal Playlists

Welcome back!

Here are some of my playlists to keep you company in 2017!

Spotify

This playlist consists of a mix of alternative, pop, reggae, and trap music. There are also a couple country songs and some EDM here and there. I'm a big fan of remixes and covers, so you'll find my favorites in here.

I usually play this playlist when I'm getting ready in the morning, traveling, or have friends over. There are also some calming tunes great for studying!

SoundCloud

I mainly use Soundcloud to follow new releases from DJs and hunt down cool remixes. The different categories were created loooong ago. I try to stick by them, but inevitably, some songs belong to more than one, and I slack off sometimes. So bear with me here!
