Look for Less: Viktor and Rolf Spring 2019 Couture

If you’re anything like me then for the past week your Instagram has been swamped with photos and commentary on the Viktor and Rolf Spring 2019 Couture Collection. The plethora of passive-aggressive statements pasted defiantly on swathes of multicolored tulle mirror our internal monologue when a man tells us we’d be prettier if we smiled, a parent cautions us against the destructive force of “the marijuanas,” or we see yet another depressing statistic about the effects of climate change.

Everything might suck, we might be harboring an immense amount of pent up rage, but damnit we will deal with it in a ruffled hot pink gown. Here’s how to express your ironic rage for way less than a haute couture piece straight off the Paris runway.

Look for Less: Winter Fashion

Found yourself going through your closet and realising that you don't have any piece of clothing that's fitted for the chilly days ahead? Started layering all your long sleeves so you don't freeze to death in that one classroom where the AC is questionably still on despite the 30 degree weather outside? Time for some shopping. Here's a quick guide to warmer options you might wanna consider buying for this winter while still looking polished and stylish, and more importantly, still finding quality items at a reasonable price. Also attached are a couple looks from celebrities for you to use as inspiration as you try out the following looks. Hopefully this post helps you stay not-so-broke during this holidays (and finals) season!

(Click on images to shop or view source)

The Hat

Let's start right from the top. Bakerboy hats. You probably caught the Hadids or bloggers picking up on the trend. Although these hats will remain as fashion-over-function items in your closet, we've been watching them take their place in the accessories sections in stores. From Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin to today's high-fashion runway shows, these hats are certainly going to be around for a while. If you're bored of your pom pom beanies and unintentional Tumblr girl looks, Topshop unsurprisingly has a couple bakerboy hats to offer.

The Sweatshirt

Another trend I am particularly excited for this year are sweatshirts. Sweatshirts? For winter? Groundbreaking. Baggy, comfy cotton sweaters are the way to embrace street style. I personally feel like wool and knit usually run the risk of looking cheaper than expected, whereas thick cotton sweatshirts are great for creating a much more casual, contemporary and clean look. In terms of functionality, whereas wind gets through knit and wool makes you itchy, these sweatshirts will keep you warm and comfortable! They look perfect when tucked inside skinny jeans and leather pants, or worn over black tights and heeled boots. One thing I've really been into is going for vintage-inspired bright sweatshirts with lively colours to add some colour to the winter season. Street style has been on the rise lately, and instead of the likes of Off-White, Acne Studios and Yeezy, brands like Champion, Reebok, FILA etc. might be worth trying out. Though thrift shops are sure to have a lot to offer, take a look at these pieces from Urban Outfitters.

The Pants

People usually overlook how versatile tailored pants (i.e cigarette pants, peg pants) can be. They do not have to be worn with smart casual looks, and can also be paired with casual pieces. I personally love pairing a dressier item - heels, blouses, tailored pants - with either baggy casual pieces or colourful vintage tops. This expands the functionality of your closet, and gives you the chance to go from day to night. I thought that I had to make up for roasting ASOS in the next paragraph, so below you'll find tapered and comfortable pants to wear this winter.

The Boots

You know you wanted over-the-knee boots the moment you saw Taylor Swift with those red velvet boots. If you feel like these boots are too bold of a choice for you, try going for completely black ones. I for one avoided buying shoes, especially boots, from ready-to-wear retailers for the longest time. This aversion was due to my experience with ASOS shoes, which fitted me perfectly, but were impossible to be worn during the day. Whether it was the pain I had to endure every time I took a step, or the low-quality material of the heels and suede (you know, the usual stuff), I ended up at a point where I'd complain about my bad experiences with shoes on a blog post. However, I've recently bought my second pair of shoes from Zara and I must now share this discovery with the rest of the world. This season, take a stab at over-the knee boots with the following selections from your most trustworthy retailer:

Millennial Pink Is Having a Moment

This year's go-to color has been spotted everywhere from Glossier's photo-worthy packaging to Gigi Hadid's enviable street style, the coolest app interfaces and Gucci's runways season after season. Whether you like it or not, pink in all spades of pastel and powdery hues is definitely having a moment.

If you haven't spotted shades of pastel and salmon pink adorning everything from Everlane newsletters, to the ads for the "revolutionary" period underwear from Thinx, the adorable camera bags at Pop & Suki, Sprinkles cupcake boxes, Mansur Gavriel's pop up shop in NYC and, of course, Glossier's bubbly branding, poke around the Internet and scroll through the biggest trending products, companies and brand aesthetics. Most will feature some iteration of this hue, accompanied by an equally appealing font and Instagram-able packaging.

Clockwise from top: Pop & Suki handbags (image via); Acne Studios tote bag (image via); Rihanna x Puma Fenty (image via); Glossier packaging (image via

So why exactly has this color persisted for the past several fashion seasons? According to buyers, it sells well. Unlike Pantone's colors of the year, which drift in and out of style over the span of several months, Millennial Pink first gained traction back in 2012, largely due to buzz on Tumblr, and since then has only skyrocketed in it's popularity. Of course, part of the color's continued appeal stems from its frequent use by online borne "it brands" like Glossier and Everlane. It also can't hurt that it's been adopted as a frequent street style staple for trendsetters like Rihanna, Gigi Hadid and Harry Styles.

According to The Cut, the shade has also managed to shed its reputation as a color associated with traditional notions of femininity–baby showers and Barbie's pink-infused, dream life come to mind. In recent years, the color has adopted more androgynous connotations amongst millennials, who are happy to incorporate the color into their wardrobes and lifestyle. Maybe Paul Simonon (of the punk rock band The Clash) was right, pink really is the only true rock-and-roll color.

Look for Less: Business Summer Internship

Searching for the right summer internship wardrobe can be tough and pricey. Whether you've never owned a blazer before in your life or you're just looking for the perfect accent piece, keep reading for MODA's roundup of our favorite business casual looks, all for under $100!

Suiting

You can never really go wrong with a tailored navy or black blazer, but if your workplace dress code allows it, experimenting with linen and white suiting can help beat the summer heat. The blazer is the bedrock of any business casual look, so it's important to purchase one (or more) pieces that you know you'll feel comfortable and confident in on a daily basis.

Dresses & Tops

Dresses and tops often occupy a grey area in terms of workplace appropriateness. While they make for a sophisticated and put-together look, be conscious of see-through materials, low necklines and dresses that are too short or too tight. It's typically safe to shop within the neutral color range (think white, grey, black, navy and beige), but pastels also work nicely in a summer setting.

Bottoms

Pencil skirts have almost always been a workplace wardrobe staple, but they can feel confining–especially in the summer heat. Don't be afraid to experiment with loose fitting slacks or cropped trousers for a more comfortable and mobile look.

Shoes & Accessories

Accessorizing in the workplace should be kept to a minimum. Opt for simple staple pieces that aren't too flashy and can be worn again and again. For shoes, only go for high heels if you're 100% confident in your ability to walk in them and remain comfortable throughout the entirety of your shift!

❤️ EVENING FORMAL LOOK ❤️

There's no better excuse to up the ante with an amazing outfit than date night on Valentine's Day. If you don't feel like being super dressy, throw on a nice coat or a pair of killer shoes to make a slightly more subdued statement.

Look for Less: Holiday Party

Now that finals are done, holiday party season starts in full swing. From endless rounds of Secret Santa and the stress of holiday shopping, the last thing you want to worry about is what to wear to the next office/family/friend gathering on your calendar. Lucky for you, MODA has compiled our favorite frocks, outerwear, accessories and more to keep you warm and fashion forward throughout the holidays. So spare a moment from studying and splurge a little on yourself!

BABY, IT'S COLD OUTSIDE

A stylish and sophisticated coat can tie together almost any look. Ditch the puffers and parkas and opt for a more streamlined statement that can easily be recycled into your work or formal wardrobe once the holiday season comes to an end.

YOUR STATEMENT LOOK

With the right accessories, you really only need one or two holiday looks to get you through the season. A dress that fits like a glove but isn't too flashy can also be easily reincorporated into your closet for day to day wear. At the same time, there's no better excuse to don something shimmery and festive than the holidays!

SHOES & ACCESSORIES

Definitely don't splurge in this area if you already have a fairly extensive accessories collection you know you can work with. Bolder pieces can help liven up a simpler party dress and switching up shoes and jewelry is an easy way to change your look if you want to wear the same dress to multiple parties.

Happy Holidays from the MODA Team!

Look for Less: Vetements

For those of you who haven't already hopped on the Vetements street meets chic style revolution, you've been missing out. Headed by the elusive Gvasalia, a veteran of Marc Jacobs, Nicholas Ghesquiere and Maison Martin Margiela, the brand (pronounced vet-mahn, meaning "clothes" in French) launched back in 2014. Since then, it has become a staple in everything from Vogue magazine editorials to skater street culture, a cult favorite amongst fashion world socialites and teenage boys alike.

Don't get what all the hype is about? Vetements barreled onto the fashion scene at a time when a lot of designers were playing it safe. With its gender-bending silhouettes and resistance against the status quo, it's not hard to see how refreshing a Star Wars themed midi skirt or asymmetrically hemmed pair of boyfriend jeans would look on the runway. Keep scrolling for MODA's favorite Vetements inspired looks (that'll fetch for a lot cheaper than the brand's $1000 price tags!).

Look for Less: 90s Revival

From chokers to slip dresses, mom jeans and white sneakers, everyone seems to be channeling the 90s in their sartorial choices. Keep scrolling for MODA's top looks, from iconic club wear inspired by our favorite supermodel trifecta, to cropped sweater and skirt sets circa Clueless, and the ensembles worn by our favorite 90s girl groups.

FOR MAKING THE CLASSROOM YOUR CATWALK:

A head-to-toe pastels outfit can be overkill unless you add variation to the look with different fabrics and silhouettes that read more flirty than demure (re: the photo below, which pairs cable knit sweaters with shiny mini skirts).

image via

image via

FOR RESIDUAL TEEN ANGST:

Don't be afraid to mix and match patterns and push the envelope to master the quintessential 90s grunge look. If you want to show off your figure underneath all the heavy sweaters, midi skirts and combat boots, cinch a vintage belt around your waist.

image via

image via

FOR SOME SPORTY SPICE:

Coordinating your outfits with all your friends is definitely not a precursor to mastering this 90s look, but if you want to channel your favorite girl groups of the age–from Destiny's Child to the Spice Girls–mix and match brand name pieces with more day to day staples.

image via

image via

FOR THE ULTIMATE GIRLS NIGHT OUT:

Ditch the body-con dress in favor of a satin, velvet or silk slip for a night out. This look is incredibly versatile and can be dressed up or down with select accessories. Toss on a jean jacket and some sneakers and you can easily transition this look into a daytime staple as well.

Look for Less: Back to School

With a little less than two months left of summer break before we all head back to Hyde Park and Fall Quarter classes roll around, there's no harm in transitioning your wardrobe from summer to fall ready pieces.

Keep reading for MODA's ultimate back-to-school ready looks, inspired by our favorite fashion-savvy screen sirens.

FOR THE CLASSIC DRESSER:

image via

image via

Who hasn't dreamed of donning one of Cher's chic, plaid power suits at some point in their academic career? Modernize this quintessential schoolgirl look by mixing tried and true pieces (e.g. a fitted blazer, pleated skirt or brogues) with jeans, sneakers or a favorite band tee.

The key to pulling off the uniform look in a campus setting is to not go overboard with patterns and matching suit sets, but to integrate these items with your own personal style. Whoever said button downs don't pair well with combat boots?

FOR THE STATEMENT MAKER:

image via

image via

Blair and Serena always managed to tie together even the most absurd of outfits with a statement bag or accessory, so take note. Clashing patterns and prints can be fun, especially when well executed, but it's important to ground even the loudest of looks in a classroom setting.

Establish a sense of cohesiveness, whether that be in color, silhouette or overall aesthetic, with your accessories while keeping in mind that jewelry should always add something to a look. As Coco Chanel once preached "I always take off at least one piece of jewelry before I leave the house... to ensure that I am not 'overdoing' it."

FOR THE RULE BREAKER:

image via

image via

For many of us, Mia Sara's portrayal of Sloane Peterson, Ferris Bueller's edgy younger girlfriend, represented the epitome of cool. From her fringed jacket to her high-waisted shorts, channel your inner Sloane by layering oversize, tomboyish looks with more feminine pieces.

For instance, a delicate lace blouse or heeled booties pair surprisingly nicely with distressed jeans and a vintage moto jacket. Don't be afraid to mix and match masculine and feminine silhouettes to master this effortless, laid-back look. Accessorize sparingly and subtly.

Look for Less: Paris Haute Couture Street Style

While floor grazing Valentino gowns and jewel encrusted Chanel suits always draw fashion's best and brightest to the front row each couture week, the main attraction arguably took place in the Parisian streets this year, as first time models to the most seasoned show-goers dashed from show to show.

From custom embroidered Gucci bomber jackets to ensembles swathed in silvers and spring's boldest hues, this month, MODA draws your Look for Less inspiration from the street style stars at Paris Haute Couture Week.

Dressing comfortably doesn't have to be dull or sloppy. Combine a loose top with more fitted bottoms and accessorize sparingly for a look that registers as laid back yet put together. Experiment with loud prints for items that otherwise have more traditional silhouettes, and shop in the men's section for pieces that are just the right amount of oversized.

Layering different looks is most likely the last thing that comes to mind when getting dressed during the summer. Wearing an oversized sweater or blouse underneath strappy dresses and tanks, however, is a clever way to recycle items that might be inappropriate in an office or casual setting when worn on their own. Look for Less: Summer Breeze

Are you starting to feel overwhelmed, jealous and/or annoyed by the sheer amount of Coachella related content that has inundated your newsfeed? Don't worry, so are we. So until we can afford to drop everything and fly to California for a flower crown infused weekend of DJ sets, face paint and cutoffs, here are five Coachella-inspired looks all for under $30 that are perfect for UChicago's very own Summer Breeze.

1Up your style ante with a tie-front, halter or backless crop top. Rather than gravitating towards traditional festival favorites like tribal print, tie dye or fringe, opt for a subdued or spring inspired look for a more unique take on this popular, laid-back trend.

Look for Less: Kendall Jenner's Back to Black

Kendall's living the life: fame (she just landed her own solo cover of American Vogue), fortune (with an estimated net worth of $12 million), followers (52.3 million on the 'gram), and a family like no other. Along with bestie and fellow reality-star-daughter-turned-model Gigi Hadid, she's been slaying the street style scene in simple, elevated basics. And by elevated, we mean elevated price tags. Since Kendall clearly never needed to shop on a college-girl budget, we rounded up our favorite picks, each under $100, to recreate her cool-kid minimalist look.

Image via

Image via

This is the perfect look for all those who cringe at the slew of floral/ruffle/chiffon outfits that spring usually brings about. A refreshing black and white palette will make you stand out in a sea of muted pastels. Sleek and comfy is the goal with this look. The coat can be ditched when it warms up during the day and the sneakers are perfect for a picnic lunch on the quad.

Image via

Image via

The clean lines of this sharply cut coat make it ideal for layering over more form-fitting pieces. The popped collar kicks it up a notch, while the belt cinches in for a smooth silhouette over skinny jeans, fancy dresses or mini skirts.

Look for Less: Karlie Kloss's Refined Basics

With the rise of Instagram famous fashionistas and bloggers it's easy to get caught up in lusting after the latest kooky Gucci shoe (looking at you fur-lined loafer-mules!) or rainbow bikini, and forget the appeal of luxe, well-paired basics. Here, supermodel/entrepreneur/student/coder/all around sweetheart Karlie Kloss gives a lesson in how to pair wardrobe staples for maximum impact.

Karlie's look centers on classic wardrobe staples executed flawlessly. From the just-right fit of her leather leggings to the perfect mid-thigh length of her trench, this whole outfit just screams (or rather elegantly declares) effortless taste and class.

Image via

Start off with a timeless trench. This is one of those pieces you'll turn to time and time again without ever tiring of it. The length is perfect for pairing with jeans or over shorter dresses while the leather bands around the cuffs add a touch of luxe.

(on sale for $102)

Karlie anchors the sexiness of her leather leggings with a schoolboy chic oxford-and-knit layering. Skip the hassle with this ingenious two-in-one option which achieves a similar effect without any added bulkiness.

What really makes this outfit pop are Karlie's leggings. Leather leggings are endlessly versatile. Pair with a crop top and strappy pumps for a sleek going-out look or with over-the-knee boots and a chunky sweater for a deceptively put-together lazy day outfit.

Black booties are the work horses of our fall/winter wardrobes. Step it up a notch with this gorgeous leather pair. The narrow ankle cut ensures a streamlined look with the leather leggings while the bone heels make them stand out.

Complete the outfit with a minimalist chain strap bag. Big enough for your essentials without weighing you (or your wallet) down, this cute little number looks more expensive than it really is.

Look for Less: Gigi Hadid's Monochromatic Nude

There's something so refreshingly clean and simple about monochromatic dressing. It's practically goof-proof and always effortlessly sophisticated. Recreate Gigi Hadid's classic camel outfit for a fraction of the price with MODA's top budget picks. As for that flawless hair? Sorry, but you're on your own for that!

Image via

Image via

The trick to keep monochromatic dressing from falling flat is to mix up the textures and tones. Here, Gigi pairs a silky apricot-hued shirt dress with nude patent pumps with a hint of gold and a more camel colored wool coat. The reflective orange-red lenses of her sunglasses, while broadly in the same color family, add a splash of color.

This look starts with the dress. Since we aren't all off-duty supermodels, tone down the maxi-length with mega-slits for this shorter, belted number. The peachy pink color flatters all complexions while the buttons and roll up sleeves mean you can make it as demure or flirty as you want.

($41)

The next major piece to accomplish this look is a fabulous camel coat. Endlessly versatile with its neutral color and elegantly draped neckline, this will dress up even a basic denim-and-white-tee look.

($51)

Nude pumps are among the hardest working pieces in any girl's wardrobe. The subtly pointed toe on this pair is leg lengthening (we can't all be runway-strutting supermodels) and the heel height is high enough to be super flattering without leaving you tottering around.

($62)

Top off the look with a pair of colored aviators for the ultimate off-duty-supermodel touch. As if emulating fashion's hottest golden girl wasn't enough to make your day, now you'll literally see la vie en rose.
