Killer Fashion: Horror's Most Stylish Female Leads

Horror is a genre that’s loved (and loathed), and this season is the perfect excuse to fear the things that go bump in the night. From the paranormal and occult to neo-monsters and the undead, the wide range of variety that comes with thrillers breeds something for everyone to enjoy. Usually.

Costume is a crucial aspect to the mise-en-scene in any film. Young, female protagonists and villains (especially in the 90s) did a bang-up job at not only being stellar characters, but also displaying some impressive fashion choices in the midst of the gore. In no particular order, here are some teen girls who did just that.

Laurie Strode (Halloween, 1978)

Image via

Image via

Hailed the ultimate scream queen, this list would not exist without Jamie Lee Curtis, who plays protagonist Laurie Strode in the Halloween franchise. Simple but still chic, Laurie’s relatable, day-to-day style definitely didn’t hinder her ability to fight off mask-cladded villain Michael Myers.

“There’s nothing to be scared of!”

Laurie’s outfits may be simple, but they showcase a combination of flattering silhouettes and comfortable layers. During the day she opts for earthy tones: a beige, knitted cardigan thrown atop a dark green turtle-neck, white leggings underneath a knee-length patterned skirt, and brown dress shoes. Her choice of babysitting attire is a light blue dress shirt tucked into dark blue, high-waisted, flared dress pants. In both of these outfits, she reflects 70’s girl-next-door style to a T. The fact that Curtis had to buy the clothes herself at JCPenney (with just a $200 budget, by the way) deserves all the props and more.

Tatum Riley (Scream, 1996)

Image via

Image via

Tatum Riley (played by Rose McGowan) may have met an untimely demise, but she looked great while doing it. She was not only a bold and spunky best friend, but she also did a great job keeping up the comic relief whenever Sidney (main protagonist of Scream) needed some cheering up. Throughout the slasher, Tatum keeps it light on the makeup and accessories, opting instead for bold pieces to take front and center in her looks.

Oh, you wanna play psycho killer?

Tatum Riley, Scream (1996)

Tatum’s main outfits showcase a unique style of her own. She pairs a cropped football jersey with medium-rise red pants (a silhouette that screams 90’s), along with black combat boots and red rubber-bands in her braids to tie it off. Her more chic option is the infamous pale yellow, short-sleeved turtleneck, paired with a plaid mini-skirt and white ankle boots. She trades the plaid skirt for a psychedelic pattern by night for the party scene, but it’s in this that she fails to one-up the killer and becomes another X on his list. Tatum’s disregard for classic style rules rightfully deserves the eye of those who appreciate fashion in film.

Helen Shivers (I Know What You Did Last Summer, 1997)

Helen, pictured far left. Image via

Helen, pictured far left. Image via

Though it’s easy not to sympathize with the characters of this teen slasher (they did kill and dump a body, after all), it is plain to see that Helen Shivers (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar) channeled an iconic style prevalent in the 90’s and early 2000’s.

Helen, pictured left. Image via

Helen, pictured left. Image via

It's my goal to entertain the world through artistic expression. Through art I shall serve my country!

Helen Shivers, I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

The most popular of her many styles is the sleeveless, tied-up white crop top and black mini-skirt combo. Paired with accents like a chain belt, silver arm-band, chunky black head-band, and black sunglasses, Helen sure knows how to accessorize. Her quick, more overlooked outfits demonstrate that as well: for example, the baby blue crop top and black newsboy cap, along with a (not pictured) lime green tank top and jade necklace, were some stylish choices. If anything, Helen’s style is trendy from head to toe, and her eye for detail did not go amiss.

Bonnie Harper (The Craft, 1996)

Bonnie, pictured far right. Image via

Bonnie, pictured far right. Image via

1996 was definitely the year of Neve Campbell: famous for playing the lead protagonist and so-called “final girl” Sidney Prescott in Wes Craven’s Scream, Campbell’s first widely-released film was actually The Craft, from earlier in the year. Prescott’s character Bonnie Harper is a witch in a self-made coven of troubled girls, and Bonnie’s style definitely channels the dark and occult.

Bonnie, pictured second to right

I take into myself the power to be beautiful, outside as well as in.

Bonnie Harper, The Craft (1996)

Image via

Image via

The girls in the film are famous for making their school uniform their own, and Bonnie exemplifies that. She uses layers (so, so many layers) to both stand out and hide from the crowd. She layers an oversized navy jacket over a black uniform cardigan, over a white dress shirt, over a white turtleneck, along with black leggings under a plaid skirt and combat boots. In an equally as modest but more chic choice, she pairs accessories such as a chunky black scarf and circle-framed sunglasses with a thick black sweater and beige maxi skirt. Often overshadowed in terms of style by main antagonist Nancy Downs, Bonnie delivers much to be appreciated: with no shortage of leather jackets, combat boots, and layered silver necklaces, Bonnie is quite the stylish witch.

Jennifer Check (Jennifer’s Body, 2009)

Image via

Image via

Jennifer’s Body has recently been hailed as an iconic feminist horror film with a large cult following (rightfully so), and Megan Fox did wonders at portraying the powerful, boy-eating succubus Jennifer Check. Jennifer’s style, trendy and chic, very well reflects her status in school: resident it-girl.

Image via

Image via

And now, I'm eating your boyfriend. See? At least I'm consistent.

Jennifer Check, Jennifer’s Body (2009)

Image via

Image via

Jennifer definitely takes inspiration from early 2000’s trends, especially midriff-revealing tops and low-rise jeans. She’s often seen wearing a (usually pink) cropped sweater over a collared shirt with blue jeans. In one particular outfit she uses this combination and adds accents such as heart-shaped acrylic earrings and a heart-locket necklace, a staple to most of her looks. On the night of her sacrifice she’s seen in a cropped white puffer jacket (with, of course, the fur hood), a cheetah print blouse, a frayed denim skirt, and a studded belt that spells ‘LOVE’. She even looks stunning after feeding off her best friend’s boyfriend: donned in a white ball gown with elbow-length gloves to match, she swaps out her infamous heart locket for a black choker. Timeless in its essence, Jennifer’s style is straight-up fun to look at, especially with the callbacks to the early 2000’s. Best of all, it’s easily recreatable. Sans all the blood, that is.

The Spooky Truth About Glitter

That glitter eyeshadow is cute - but at what cost?

It’s almost time for Halloween, which means one thing: lots of glitter. Whether it’s in costumes, makeup, or your next prank on your roommate, glitter is a fun, harmless way to let out your creative side. Or is it?

Not true: contrary to popular belief, non-eye safe glitter poses real threats to your health, including scratched corneas and infections that can send you to the ER.

What, exactly, is non-eye safe glitter?

In order to understand what makes glitter eye-safe or not, it’s first important to understand what exactly glitter is. According to the BBC, glitter can be made from various materials, including plastic, metal, glass, biodegradable kelp, and mica. The first two are often used to make big glitter particles - what you would traditionally think of as glitter. Because of environmental concerns, however (glitter is a type of microplastic), many companies are using non-traditional, more eco-friendly materials such as kelp or mica. [1]

In addition to material, glitter can be informally sorted by grade. Craft glitter is what you think of as glitter - bigger, chunky, usually made of metal or plastic, and with sharper edges. On the other hand, cosmetic-grade glitter is the name of glitter that follow standards set by the beauty industry. Typically, cosmetic-grade glitter are small particles made from polymers, with hexagonal edges as to reduce the risk of injury. It tends to be smaller, and is thus considered “safer” for eyes. [2]

What are the dangers of glitter?

Two words: eye damage. Craft glitter is out of the question - the metal and sharp edges mean that there is a very real risk of scratching your cornea, which can lead to eye infections and long-term eye damage. Even cosmetic glitter, which is considered by some to be safer, carries risks - it still has sharp edges, and because of its small size, can be harder to wash out once it’s in your eye. As stated before, the sharp edges can cut the cornea which result in corneal scratches. Although most corneal scratches usually heal in a day or two, they require special attention, especially those caused by plant matter. Otherwise, they can turn into eye infections and eye ulcers. [3]

What are the dangers of glitter? Two words: eye damage.

Non-plastic glitter also carries risks. Lush USA, when reached for comment, verified that their glitter is plastic-free, but recommends against getting it in the eye area. The Food and Drug Administration goes so far as to go against any use of glitter, even cosmetic-grade, around the eye area. [4] Clearly, the danger is real.

What does that mean for me, the consumer?

Unfortunately, many companies still do not disclose whether the glitter they use is eye-safe or not. Other times, the label is barely visible, serving as a way for companies to claim plausible deniability when something goes wrong. It’s wrong and unfair to consumers. After all, why put eye glitter in products that are clearly meant to be used in the eye area unless companies know they can get away with it? Sadly, the current trend of glitter-mania shows no signs of stopping, and so it becomes up to us, the consumers, to be aware of the dangers. The author recommends using glitter, if you must, around the eyes only if it’s explicitly stated to be eye-safe. Be careful in removing the glitter. And please, please don’t use craft glitter.

Unfortunately, many companies still do not disclose whether the glitter they use is eye safe or not.

So this Halloween, skip the glitter around the eyes. Your corneas will thank you.

Rihanna Is My Fairy Gothmother This Halloween

In order: Unbutton, Uninvited, Uncuffed, and Unveil (Image via)

In order: Unbutton, Uninvited, Uncuffed, and Unveil (Image via)

Rihanna has recently come out with an explosion of new makeup products for this upcoming holiday season. From a new highlighter palette to multi-purpose metallic crayons, she’s got your whole face covered.

However, in the spirit of Halloween I wanted to review the Fenty Stunna Lip Paint in the shade Uninvited, which is the goth-y black lipstick color of my emo dreams. Uninvited released alongside three other nude colors: Unveil, Uncuffed, and Unbutton. I personally have been loving Unbutton, which is an everyday peachy nude.

Image via

Image via

In preparation of being Sam from Danny Phantom this Halloween (I know she wears purple but I want to go full angst mode), I picked up Uninvited to try out for the weekend. It happened to be that I was sick so my lips didn’t go through a whole day of usual wear, but instead suffered through a whole day of sniffling and consuming mass amounts of chicken soup.

Upon application the lip paint stayed wet and glossy on my lips for a few minutes before drying down into a smooth finish. I only needed a single layer for full opacity, which is super impressive for a black lip. My usual Wet n’ Wild black lip typically needs two applications for the look I desire. My lips didn’t look dehydrated or chapped like I had thought they would, and stayed the same way for the next several hours. Around hour five I noticed some fading, which is great for such a dark lip. The only issue I had was the the lip paints claimed to be non-transferrable which wasn’t true for me.

Image via.

Image via.

Comparing Uninvited to other black lipsticks, it’s clear that it’s a strong contender. Not only was the opacity far better than other black lipsticks I’ve tried, but the finish of it is unique. The Fenty Lip Paints are a hybrid between a normal lipstick and a liquid lipstick in terms of texture and finish, leaving a sexy, velvet look. This is definitely going to be my choice for this year’s Halloween night.

Feeling Uninspired? Consider These 15 Halloween Costume Ideas

The best and worst part about Halloween in college? It's been stretched out over an entire weekend, which means one or two more costumes alternates you didn't have to worry about back in your trick-or-treating days. Don't worry though! We've got you covered with costume ideas that are relevant to pop culture, meme culture, UChicago culture, or all of the above!

1. One of the old Taylor Swifts

A great group costume idea–so long as you're all comfortable being a part of this narrative! Pick from one of countless iterations of everyone's favorite victim, plus get bonus points for choosing such a spooky costume–she is dead after all!

Weigel-The-Handmaids-Tale.jpg

2. Handmaid's Tale

This costume idea is creepy on multiple levels, especially if you squad up with friends, but it's probably not too hard to fashion one of those weird blinders/bonnets out of a paper towel roll. Blessed be the fruit!

3. Vue53

Make a statement and make a ton of friends at the party! You can even follow up next year's Halloween with your take on UChicago's latest domineering architectural feat: the new hotel on 53rd St!

4. It

You kind of have to go big or go home with this one, so stock up on face paint now before Michaels is all sold out.

5. Sex and the City squad

The 90s are back in almost every respect in terms of fashion these days, so why not pay homage to the ultimate 90s girl squad?? Team up with three gal (or guy) pals... just make sure you don't get stuck being the Carrie of the group.

6. One of the pregnant Kardashian/Jenners

Only for the most iconic of trios. A good last minute backup since you never know which one will be next! Lip injections optional. Ask a satellite friend to be Kim's surrogate.

7. Trump's ex cabinet members

Another amazing group costume idea. Plus there are newly deposed options to choose from almost everyday, so the squad can keep growing!

8. The cast of Riverdale

Again, another group costume idea. You and your friends are probably not as good looking and/or tortured as these highschool sophomores, but it's worth a shot!

9. A handsome soldier from Dunkirk

Did you know every single British soldier who fought in WWII was incredibly handsome, well groomed and fashionable dressed even in the face of adversity? Me neither. Only try this look if you're okay talking to some guy about how he exclusively watches film in 35mm for the rest of the night.

okja-trailer.jpg

10. Okja

Not really sure how one can create a convincing enough costume to pass as the pig/hippo hybrid from Okja, but it's worth a shot!

sneaker-shopping_bella-hadid_-443.png

11. The dope sneakerhead of Bella Hadid's dreams

Roll through the party in this costume and homeboy is gonna like, get it.

Baywatch-600x338.jpg

12. Baywatch

Did anyone actually see this movie? Probably not. But what better excuse do you have to wear a swimsuit in public?

wonder-woman.png

13. Wonder Woman

Probably the Harley Quinn of Halloweekend 2017, this option isn't original by any means, but it's sexy and as long as you're down to be one of twenty other Gal Gadots at the party, this is a pretty decent option!

104385867-kendall-jenner-pepsi-1.600x400.jpg

14. Kendall Jenner and a can of Pepsi

Proceed with caution–only a true power couple can pull this look off with panache. It takes a real dynamic duo to end racism and social injustice, and in a Canadian tuxedo no less!

15. A black cat

No shame, we're not judging. This one's a classic. You probably still have the cat ears from last Halloween, which makes this a solid choice for when you inevitably panic at the last minute about not having one of the amazing aforementioned costumes.

Halloweekend Makeup Looks

To be honest, getting ready for Halloween is tough. But if you're obsessed with all things beauty like I am, Halloween allows you to explore that more creative side! Let your makeup be the focal point of the night. Just make sure to set with setting spray so it doesn't slide off as you go through haunted houses or dance the night away.

Rainbow Mouth Snapchat Filter- My roommate did an amazing recreation of this look last year and got a ton of compliments. It's super easy and since it's a snapchat filter, you don't have to worry about your costume. Throw on what you feel comfortable for the night, do the makeup, and voila, you're done!

Game of Thrones: Daenerys Targaryen- GoT is a classic. You love it, you hate it and for Halloween, you can be one! Michelle Phan beautifully captures Daenerys' makeup look, so if you're ready to rule the night, this look is for you.

Trippy Double Vision- This takes a bit more artistic skill, but if you can nail it dow, you'll definitely have people turning their heads. It's creative yet has that chill factor that screams Halloween!

Porcelain/Cracked Doll- If you want to wear dresses on Halloween, these makeup looks are perfect to complement your look. They're fairly simple to pull off and the two looks are contrasting enough that you could definitely re-wear them the next day.

Flapper Girl- Wanting to travel back to the 20's? This flapper girl look by Michelle Phan is that amazing blend of cute and sexy. Though the costume may be the highlight of this look. You can definitely not forget about the makeup! The striking colors are bold enough to make their own statement.

Half skull- What is Halloween without the scare factor? This look will draw all eyes to you as you walk into a room. They think you look perfectly normal from one side but when you turn your head, you're in for a surprise! You can also just do a full skull face using this same tutorial.

Keep a look out for our other Halloween posts coming your way!

1. Hamilton

This might require some extensive pre-planning if you want to nail the period costumes just right, but there's little else more topically relevant to 2016 (apart from a Harambe or election inspired costume).

2. Teyana Taylor in Fade

Definitely dress this one up a little bit for the sake of public decency, but who wouldn't want to channel Fade's upgraded, 80s workout vibe? If there's an Iman Shupert in your life, all the better for a great couples costume.

3. The Final Five

Perfect for a group of friends, this costume idea is fairly low maintenance if you opt for already owned athletic clothes and DIY the gold medals. Bonus points if you add a Zac Efron look-alike into the mix.

4. Bella Hadid's 20th birthday party outfit

Disclaimer: this look is definitely not for the faint of heart and may require some extra ab workouts.

5. Ken Bone

Channeling America's favorite environmentally conscious, undecided voter will guarantee you some laughs, plus the quarter zip will keep you warm throughout the weekend's inevitably chilly temperatures.

6. Any Beyoncé outfit from her Lemonade visual album

Who wouldn't want to channel their inner Queen Bey, if only for a day? With plenty of incredible looks to choose from, the options are endless. (FYI: we recommend going sans baseball bat for the sake of safety.)

7. Zootopia

Hear us out: this is another good group idea if you and some friends are down to spice up the trademark sexy cop costume with some animal ears or face paint.

8. Yeezy diehard

If you weren't fortunate enough to snag some of Kanye's overpriced tour merchandise, you can easily sacrifice an old t-shirt and feel just like Pablo with the help of some fabric paint.

9. Any assortment of characters from the Stranger Things cast

Fairly easy to throw together last minute with a couple of friends, showing up to a party in 80s inspired geek-chic might make you feel straight out of a John Hughes movie. Cruiser bikes and/or shaving your head is definitely optional to your costume.

10. Save the Bees

The global decline of bee populations is no joke, but you can get some laughs and raise crucial awareness for an environmentally conscious cause that hits close to home.

The Perfect UChicago-Themed Halloween Costumes!

You may be thinking, "Oh no! I have no idea what to dress up as for Halloween?!?" No need to fear, your fashionista Hanna is here to give you some amazing UChicago-themed ideas for you to rock around campus and definitely turn heads!

1. Wednesday $1 Milkshake

UChicago is known for many things, but one thing that sets the school apart and brings students together is the $1 milkshakes that are sold at C-Shop. All you need is a cylinder-shaped body suit, a white piece of paper to use as the stray, and a huge "Wednesday $1 Milkshake" sign, and you will be wearing the sweetest costume around!

2. Your First Hum Paper

Everyone remembers their first paper, but more so the grade you got on it and the amount of ice cream they hd to eat to recover from such a blow to your pride. Just get a large piece of cardboard, paint it white, and jokingly (or seriously) write a huge "F" on it. Not only is this costume sadly relevant, but you will definitely get a few stares.

3. A Harper Library Chair

C'mon, just admit it. You spend more time in Harper taking a nap than doing actual studying... and there's no shame in that! Just grab a couch cushion and sew straps on, grab to long piece of cardboard to color red and attach to your arms, and you are a walking, talking reflection of your afternoon nap spot.

4. The Sleep-Deprived College Student

This one is easy because you live this costume everyday. You embody this costume. Live it, love it, and appreciate it by finding your favorite pair of pajamas, your go-to U of C hoodie, and the bags under your eyes that will never go away. People will be blown away by the minimalistic avenue you took, and by the simplistic yet classic design of the costume!
