In-Flight Essentials For Your Holiday Travels

As the holidays are quickly approaching, so is the busiest travel time of the year. Traveling can be stressful, but it’s a lot easier when you know exactly what you need to bring for a smooth flight. Here are the 6 essentials guaranteed to be in my carry-on this season:

1. Vitamin C

Images via

This is probably the most important thing on my list. No matter how healthy I would feel before a flight, I always seemed to get a cold the next day; the recycled air and the low levels of humidity make everyone more susceptible to illness. But when I started taking Vitamin C on the plane, this problem stopped. I used to use the powder form, but it’s super impractical to pour powder into the small opening of a water bottle as the plane is taking off and everything in front of you starts flying backwards at you. So now I just pop these dissolvable tablets in my bottle and the whole affair is over very quickly. I like the Airborne kind because the light citrus flavor isn’t too overpowering.

2. Eye cream

Images via

Let’s be honest: no one is ever looking their best coming off a flight, but this It Cosmetics eye cream can mitigate that disheveled, “how did I even get here” look ever-so-slightly. It’s hydrating, de-puffing, and brightening. Also, I always get a certain sense of pride when I put on eye cream— like, for once, I’m doing something that will actually benefit me in the future.

3. Disinfecting Wipes

Images via

I’m not a germaphobe, but I won’t lie, when people are coughing and sniffling in close proximity to me, I get a little paranoid. And yeah, maybe I even give them some side-eye from time to time. Either way, I always make sure to have cleaning wipes on me. I’ve seen people (@ my dad) go so far as to wipe down their seats and entire surroundings, but I haven’t reached that stage yet— I stick to using them on my face, hands, and arms. Because I use them on my skin, I like these gentle Johnson’s wipes. They kill 95% of germs, while still being sensitive enough for a baby’s skin.

4. Skin Mist

Images via

My skin can get very dry on the plane, but I’m just not the kind of person who can whip out a hydrating sheet mask and not feel uncomfortable with the looks I’d get. I wish I could be, but I’m not. This Tatcha Dewy Skin Mist is a good compromise— it’s extremely moisturizing and the spritzing is acceptably discreet. It feels soothing on the skin and gives a really nice glow, too. However, because it’s a fairly rich formula, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for oilier skin types.

5. Lip Treatment

Images via

Again, it’s super dry on planes. And when you’re dehydrated, so are your lips. This is technically an overnight lip mask, but I use it as a regular balm and it works better than any lip product I’ve ever tried. It comes in Original, Vanilla, Apple Lime, and two newly released limited-edition flavors: Mint Chocolate and Sweet Candy. I’ve tried the Original, Vanilla, and Mint Chocolate, and they all work equally well, but my favorite right now is the Vanilla flavor. They all go on clear and give your lips that shiny, glazed donut effect. Also, look how cute the colors are!!

6. Work

Images via

I find planes one of the best places to get work done. If you’re a procrastinator like I am, you know that it’s easy to find distractions in pretty much any situation. When you’re on a plane, these distractions are as limited as they could possibly be. First of all, the internet can be spotty on airplanes so your streaming options are limited. And you can’t go anywhere, so it’s not like you can just leave the room and pretend your work doesn’t exist. So if you bring work, you’re basically trapped in your seat with it. Also, there’s the added pressure of getting your work done before you land so you don’t have to do it during your holiday. Or if you’re returning, your in-flight productivity is boosted by that panicky feeling of having gotten nothing done your entire trip.

Beauty YouTubers to Check Out

Ah the perfect world of makeup tutorial videos, where life is peachy and the lighting is always good. You can practically breathe in the aloe and rosewater scents wafting from the screen. These videos are perfect for getting ready to or winding down after a long day, when I feel like glimpsing into somebody else’s polished daily routine. Here are my go-to beauty YouTubers, each skilled in their trade and representative of a distinctive style.

Maddie Ziegler

Age: 15

Location: Murrysville, PA/Los Angeles, CA

Style: Cali-casual, sporty

Subscriber Count: 2,417,954

Maddie intermixes more affordable, cult-favorite products like the Benefit 24-hour Brow Setter and Mario Badescu rosewater spray with higher-end products, like the La Mer moisturizing soft cream and Chanel bronzer. In her videos, she sometimes shares advice from her dermatologist Christie Kidd (such as avoiding tinted moisturizer for clearer skin!). She uses concealer and powder instead of foundation, and her makeup is natural and minimalistic, which I love. Link to her YouTube channel here.

Amanda Steele

Age: 18

Location: Huntington Beach, CA

Style: edgy, sophisticated glam

Subscriber Count: 2,809,295

Amanda’s makeup looks lean towards the heavy side, with lots of contouring and foundation. If you're one for more daring looks, definitely refer to her tutorials, as she's always experimenting with different hair colors and upping the ante of her makeup looks. Link to her YouTube channel here.

Jenn Im

Age: 27

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Style: chic, boho, Korean fashion

Subscriber Count: 2,169,425

Jenn was the vlogger who first got me into YouTube beauty tutorials, when I was just learning how to apply makeup. She's so cheerful and energetic, and occasionally I just leave her videos on in the background when folding laundry or doing busywork. I like watching her “empties” videos, where she takes empty product bottles from a prop trash can and gives reviews. In her "monthly favorites" videos, Jenn compiles makeup, diet tips, song recommendations, etc. She also travels a lot and documents the trips in her vlogs. Link to her YouTube channel here.

Extra tip: This is old news, but never let your guard down against new beauty products, be it makeup or skincare. Be cautious about trying new products on your face. Almost every dermatologist recommends products that are labeled “oil-free” and “non-comedogenic” to treat acne-prone or sensitive skin. That includes anything from face-wash, face creams, and makeup. For oily skin, opt for serums or light gels instead of lotion and cream. Always wash your face with a good cleanser at least twice daily, and preferably once more at noon on hot days. Avoid fast-acting products, such as those containing steroids or chemical brightening/whitening agents. Also, you can research natural and organic remedies, such as aloe or cucumber slices. In the crazy world of skincare products, less really does mean more.

Treat Your Skin with These Incredible, Affordable Products

When your life is falling apart and stress-filled, turn to skincare.

The aftereffects of the recent weather, unending midterms and impending finals have left my skin in shambles. So naturally, I turned to a journey of repairing what was most important to me: my skin. Here are a few products that offered me solace in times of greatest need.

PHILOSOPHY Purity Made Simple Pore Extractor Mask

I’m not sure why I was so late to the Philosophy bandwagon, but now that I’ve tried it out, I definitely understand the hype. This mask is one of the best exfoliating masks I’ve ever used. The texture of the mask is really rough, but it gets the job done. After one use, my skin felt softer and looked cleaner. Also, any mask that works great on sensitive skin is one that I approve of. This retails for $23, so it’s about your upper-mid tier product in pricing. Paired with the Purity cleanser, this is going to do wonders for your skins. Buy it here

Luminizing Pink Charcoal Mask

Boscia’s luminizing black mask is every Instagram-clickbait worthy pore extractor product’s real life parallel. I remember the first time I used this product, sitting in my room, wondering if I would be able to endure the pain of what felt like ripping my entire face off. Turns out, it’s really not that bad. So when I found out Boscia released a pink version of this mask, I actually flipped out. Take anything I like and turn it pink and you can have my money. Naturally, I gifted this to myself and spoiler alert… it’s the same as the original, but just redder. Since I like the original product so much, I have nothing more to say besides the entertaining factor of it being in colorful packaging. Both retail for $34, so pick your poison. Buy it here

Sheet masks from Sephora

For $6 per mask, Sephora has a variety of sheet masks that target different skin issues. Different scents and extracts of items such as Algae, Pearl, Orchid, Avocado, Pomegranate, and Lotus offer revitalizing benefits for your war-torn skin. Pop one of these on and you’ll be able to binge-watch the rest of all the good shows that are leaving Netflix while also toning, moisturizing, and healing your skin. My personal favorite is algae, since it really leaves my skin looking fresher and brighter. Buy it here

Missha – Creamy Chocolate Latte Cleansing Foam

When I first used this product, I was a little shook by the scent. Missha is not kidding when they say this product is a chocolate latte cleansing foam. It actually smells like chocolate, which is honestly a little weird to put over your face. It works really well though. The consistency of the cleanser is a bit soapy but foams and washes off easily. I use it in the morning as soon as I get up in the morning. It wakes you up a little and gets rid of the oiliness that might’ve accumulated overnight. This cleanser retails for $5! That's right, $5! Given that it’s available in other scents such as green tea and strawberry, those might be a better bet scent-wise. Buy it here

BB cleaner – SPARKLING BB CLEANSING FOAM

Throughout the winter, I’ve been using this cleanser with my nighttime ritual. It smells really fresh, which is really nice but the fragrance in it doesn’t overwhelm or dry out your skin. I get oily skin throughout the day and I usually wear a little bit of makeup, so this is the perfect cleanser. It foams moderately and leaves no greasy residue afterward. The one thing about this product that I really like is that it encapsulates the cleanliness of K-Beauty but also reminds me of what Glossier’s Milk Jelly Cleanser should have been. Overall, I’m really happy with this product. Because it’s priced at $6.50, this is a very accessible product. Buy it here.

Beauty Favorites: Dewey, Fresh Faces

It is no surprise that a dewey, glowing, fresh face is all the rage at the start of Spring. Prior to binging and blowing a paycheck at Sephora and Glossier, I had always been afraid of cream based products and feared they wouldn't blend or my face would get oily. Boy, was I wrong!

Despite the uncharacteristically warm weeks of mid-February this year in Chicago, the past months of Winter wind and dry air really did a number on my skin. Frequently dry and flaking, especially around my nose, I finally had had enough and have now taken a vow to quit my lazy "makeup-wipe-and-off-to-bed" routine.

With all my many new makeup and skincare items now in tow, I am here to share some tricks and products that make dewey, glowy skin an achievable goal, even after months (or 20 years) of neglect.

What's In My Bag: Belle

The Bags

Herschel Supply Co. Backpack

I wish I could rock some of the pastel colored backpacks Herschel has, but I'm a pretty monochromatic person and a plain black backpack just makes things easier. My Herschel Backpack is my staple piece for school. After carrying a leather tote everyday for two years, I needed to give my shoulders a break. This backpack is not only lightweight, it's super capacious. I typically carry two notebooks, my planner, one or two books, and my 15in. MacBook Pro and there's still space for more. I got my backpack from Urban Outfitters' mens section. Head over to the UO downtown or click on the link above to check out Herschel's other models!

Balenciaga Giant 12 Gold Mini City

I am obsessed with bags and purses and WOCs and totes but I always find my way to my Balenciaga Mini City. I carry it LITERALLY. EVERYWHERE. For brunch in the city, traveling, or hanging out with friends, this is what you want. The Balenciaga mini city is so sturdy and holds surprisingly much for its size. Its black and gold color scheme goes with every outfit. If you're like me and likes to wear black on black on black, this Balenciaga is the perfect way to add an accent to your outfit without really trying. I recommend going for the lambskin rather than other leather for this bag, just because the toughness keeps the purse's shape better and longer.

Moleskine 18 Month Academic Planner

I use this planner on the daily to remind myself of assignment due dates and deadlines. For me, having a physical copy of my reminders help me stay on top of things. It is oddly satisfying when I checkmark every task I've completed!

There is also an 18-month calendar in this planner, which I use to mark dates I travel and multi-day events.

MUJI. MUJI. MUJI. Need I say more? I'm obsessed with the simplicity of their products. The ink also flows super nicely.  Muji Online Store US

For Everyday Wear

Skincare/Cosmetics:

Mario Badescu Rose Water Spray                           L'Occitane Hand Cream

This Mario Badescu Rose Water is the bomb. I spray it on my face and hair more often than needed, but why not? The spray contains aloe and keeps my skin hydrated and refreshed throughout the day. I also use it to set my makeup sometimes if I'm only wearing some bronzer and don't want my face to feel heavy. If you're wearing a full face make up, though, this Urban Decay Setting Spray will keep you matte for the long day (or night).

I have very dry hands, especially during the winter. I carry a travel size L'Occitane hand cream with me at all times. This product has one of the highest Shea butter content among all hand creams on the market (so I was told by a Sephora shopper), so it keeps my hands moisturized and soft.

Fresh Sugar Lip Therapy                                    Tom Ford Lipstick in Indian Rose

This Fresh lip balm is honestly amazing. It has a subtle citrus scent and reminds me of a lemon sorbet. It is also a light weight base for my lipstick, hydrating my lips without adding too much oil that can prevent the lip color from setting in.

I'm obsessed with the shade Indian Rose by Tom Ford. It's a combination of a metallic finish and a creamy dusty rose color. It's great for everyday wear but also goes well with a heavier eye makeup.

Electronics:

myCharge Portable Charger with Chords and Built-in Wall Prongs

I got this portable charger as I was waiting to board at O'Hare. It is truly a lifesaver. It's carry-on sage!  The built-in chords and wall prongs make my life so much easier and I don't even have to worry about bringing my charger or untangling the chord. This portable charger can charge my iPhone 6s up to 4 times. It also recharges super fast when plugged into the wall.

Brands to Know: Glossier

Summer days are all about natural beauty and showing some skin. Especially with the intense humidity in Chicago, wearing foundation or heavy make-up is not exactly ideal when power walking to work under the hot sun. Enter Glossier, a beauty brand inspired by girls in real life. Their products are easy to use and meant to show off women's natural and unique beauty.

Here are some of their products that I have been loving:

Balm DotCom

Balm Dotcom is hydrating and smooth, and the best part is that it comes in different flavors as well as shades. If you're looking for a pop of color on your lips, try cherry balm dotcom! Just swipe it on, and you are ready to go.

Haloscope

I like this highlighter because it isn't too shiny. Instead, it's glossy so it gives your skin a refreshed look. Especially because we're constantly under the sun, make-up that is too shimmery tends to look exaggerated. So opt for something that's more dewy!

Boy Brow

Boy Brow is easy to use, especially at 7 am when you're in a rush to get ready for work! It makes your eyebrows look full and bushy, so you can skip the pencil and snooze for 5 extra minutes.

Still a little unsure about trying out a Glossier product? Use this code for 10% off your first order! Happy shopping :)

Un(Glossy)boxing - 6th and Final Box!

It's with a heavy heart that we unboxed this month's Glossybox. After a 6 month subscription, we're going to miss a box full goodies delivered straight to our doors. Along the way we've discovered some new favorites (shoutout to the Too Faced lipstick and Eyeko liner from Box 5 and the most amazing mascara ever from Box 1). But this final box didn't disappoint, presenting a mix of full and sample size beauty, skincare and fragrance products to test out this month.

The April Glossybox included a full size nail polish and face-mask, along with a double-edged eyebrow pencil and a sample sized face oil and perfume.

  • Before you open it, the perfume sample is gorgeous, the perfect glam Hollywood addition to any dresser or vanity. After dabbing a little on your wrists, it's another story. The perfume is thick and little musty - like something a grand dame of the Upper East Side might wear. Just having the smell of it wafting up from behind my ears was enough to make me nauseous.
  • The nail polish is a beautiful bright raspberry color, perfect for punching up a spring outfit. The plastic packaging, however, is on the bulky side. The color goes on smoothly and dries quickly. Pro tip to cut the drying time - soak your fingers in a cup of ice water once it's dry to the touch to lock the polish in place.
  •  The brow pencil has a cool-toned medium brown and a creamy underbrow highlighter. The brow end isn't too soft or overly pigmented, making it easy to get subtle definition and hold for Cara worthy brows. The highlighter however is a bit stiff and needs to be worked into the brow bone and the yellowish ivory tone is not versatile for all skin tones. The best part is that for every pencil sold, Studio 10 donates 100% of the profits to a charity for women with cancer.
  • When I finally got the face oil sample open (seriously, that thing was basically glued shut) and massaged it onto my face after cleansing, this face oil smelled heavenly. Slowly working it into the skin felt like getting a facial at a fancy spa. Enjoy free shipping and $20 off a full sized product (1 fl. oz) with the code "GLOSSYBOX20" at biossance.com
  • Face masks, the only company we want on a Saturday night. This one comes out as a clear watery gel and smells fresh and soothing. It sinks in quickly without any tight or itchy feelings, leaving skin velvety soft. Use once to twice a week for soft hydrated skin thanks to the aloe and ayurvedic herbs.

A Glossybox subscription makes a great gift for someone who's taste you can't quite figure out or even just as a treat to yourself. With a good mix of generous samples and full size products, it's a great value and a fun way to discover new products. While not everything was our cup of tea (that perfume still evokes memories of a stuffy great-aunt), on the whole Glossybox is a must-try!
