When We Look to the Future

Seeing campus tours invites a kind of nostalgia—one I don’t know how to identify; how to work with. You know what I mean. You walk by the groups of prospective students, their parents, and something in your heart feels like it’s going to burst at the seams.

Their UChicago merchandise, their seemingly casual glances around—at the students, at the architecture—as if they can absorb everything, the entire experience, by observing. So close that they can smell it, taste it: this is what college life looks like. Gothic buildings, fast-paced walks to class, some giggling here, some leaking music there, heavy bags and bulky coats.

Don’t get me wrong, I have no resentment towards them. If anything, we understand it. We see them, we hear them, we feel them, we were them; in fact, we still are them. Anxiousness about the future courses through our veins too, a constant worry about where we’ll be in the next few months, next few years. Trepidation about living on your own, what you’ll do when there’s a bug in your room and your mom isn’t around to take it out; stress about what you’ll do if your laptop breaks down, and your dad can’t magically fix it for you. Most importantly, eagerness. When we look to the future, just like them, we do it with excitement: when and where will I be when I am living a better life? Who will I be? Do I already know her? Do I want to? Do I recognise her? Is she happy? Can she tell me how to get there?

Because I remember being there. Walking around college campuses, trying to gauge whether future me wanted to be there by looking at students’ faces: how tired do they look? How far do their shoulders droop? Do they wish they’d chosen differently? A lot of questions, no real answers. Shuffling between “dream” colleges, as if the name(‘24) I wanted in my Instagram bio could be summoned by sheer desire—not essays, or international student quotas, or plain old luck. Worried and excited, cycling through the two emotions and pretending as if they were on two opposite sides of a scale, when really, it was both, together, all of the time.

They’ll make it, somewhere. It may be here, it may not. It may be a “dream” come true, it may not. Whatever it is, they’ll have to work with it. As will we.

Because when we look to the future, they’re there. So are we. The only prevailing question is: how far from each other? And with how much regret?

Catbird

As a fan of minimalist jewelry, I was so excited to stumble upon Catbird, a woman owned and operated company that uses only ethically sourced diamonds. Their jewelry, ranging from stackable midi rings to sparkling diamond necklaces, is so delicate and timeless. Additionally, Catbird has a wide range of prices in order to ensure that everyone can afford their quality pieces.

Maison Cléo

Although I am quite wary of many Instagram shops that push out products produced in a fast-fashion model and that are often low quality despite their high price points, Maison Cléo has proven to be a shop that is worth the extra dollars. The French mother and daughter owned shop produces timeless pieces that are made-to-order to ensure that there is never a waste of fabric. Maison Cléo is known for their sheer wrap tops such as the one pictured. The online shop only opens on Wednesdays and closes when all of the pieces sell out, so if you are interested, be sure to set a reminder!

Embryolisse Lait Crème

As a native Arizonan, the winters here are pretty harsh on my skin. Although spring is rapidly approaching, I need to give a shout-out to the moisturizer that has left my skin supple and soft despite the harsh winds and arid weather. Embryolisse Lait Crème is a thick cream that has provided my skin with moisture without making my skin look too oily. Even when the weather becomes warmer, I will still keep this moisturizer on my vanity for times when my skin needs some extra hydration.

Natasha Denona Mini Sunset Palette

As someone who almost exclusively uses orange and peachy tones on my eyes, the Natasha Denona Mini Sunset palette provides me with all of the colors that I need to create a full look without breaking the bank. At only $25, the mini palette features two shimmery metallics, one foiled, and two matte shades. Until I can afford to drop $129 on the full palette, I will be content using this one.

Us

By far the best movie I’ve seen this year, Jordan Peele’s follow up to the 2017 hit Get Out shows that horror is not a genre to be taken lightly. Us is poignant, thought-provoking and terrifying in all the best ways as well as being beautiful. Also, Lupita Nyong’o, one of my favourite actresses, gives arguably the best performance of her career playing both the main character and main villain. She is breathtaking and I’m looking forward to her Oscar win for Best Actress next year!

Leon

Swedish pop-vocalist Leon released her first album this month, and frankly, it is amazing. Her lowkey yet emotional ballads paired with some catchy bops were a pleasure to listen to this month, and if you have never heard of her, go stream Falling immediately. I’ve already got tickets for her Chicago concert and I’m beyond excited.

Plastic Outerwear

Do you have great t-shirts that you love to wear, but always get hidden when it isn’t t-shirt weather? Look no further than fully transparent outerwear. Clear hoodies and jackets are both incredibly on-trend and practical, being both water resistant and letting you show off some of your wardrobe highlights when the spring weather won’t always accommodate.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel-Cream

I spent my spring break in Florida, and wasn’t planning on packing too much makeup or skincare. So when I was thinking about what I could feasibly bring into a carryon that wouldn't irritate or weigh down on my skin, I looked to good old Kiehl’s. As someone with oily skin and knowing that I’d be spending a lot of time by the sea, I was definitely looking for a lighter, oil-free formula that would keep me hydrated all day. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Gel Cream is basically just like water, it’s super light on my face, but leaves me hydrated ALL DAY!

Avocado Ice Cream

Okay, so while in Florida, I stumbled across this amazing ice-pops shop called The Hyppo, and feeling adventurous, I picked up one of their Avocado Ice Pops. I then proceeded to have one every day for the rest of the break and realized that I couldn’t live without them. Honestly, Avocado Ice Cream is a brilliant idea: fruity, but not overpowering, super creamy, and also super adorable. I’ll definitely eat anything that looks really appealing and that pastel green hue seemed to make me less nervous about eating an ice cream… or four.

Copper Wire Jewelry

Once again, a hot Florida find. Since it’s actually summer there, we stumbled across a bunch of really cute farmer’s markets and so many sold these adorable copper wire rings. I’m still trying to get into men’s jewelry, and I’m not sure if I’m willing to drop big bucks just yet, but I find that these really unique farmers market finds are a really solid way to transition into something more opulent. I definitely like to stack thinner, more minimalistic pieces, and I think for the upcoming summer, it’s a really fun, modern take on a bohemian aesthetic.

Lavender’s Story

Lavender’s Story is a tiny body and beauty brand that is local to Chicago. It’s not hard to see that ingredients come from fresh from an urban garden when you can literally stop and smell the roses in her products. If that didn’t win you over, since the brand was created in memory of a loved one who succumbed to cancer, Lavender’s Story often donates part of its proceeds to charity.

Moscow’s Design Protections

Moscow is making a bid to become a major fashion capital, which will could signal a shift in the issues of global fashion. As part of those efforts, it extends legal protections to fashion design. New York, Paris, and the others should be vigilant. I can’t wait to see how this will play out.

Safety Regulations on Cosmetics

A bill in California was proposed to increase safety regulations on cosmetics. Currently, there are few regulations on the ingredients of cosmetics, including a lack of regulation on mercury, asbestos, and more. This bill would solidify the practices to avoid carcinogens and other toxins that many cosmetics companies have into law, ensuring the safety of consumers.

What Happens When a Basketball Player Ventures into Candle-Making

I never really cared too much for perfumes. Maison Margiela’s Replica collection surprisingly ended up impressing me, but I recently formed an obsession for a specific line’s eau de parfums and candles after a life-changing half hour conversation with an employee at Barneys. After testing out at least 15 different perfumes from Atelier Bloem, I was led to an entire table of candles, and got lost in the world of Ben Gorham.

Ben Gorham, a Swedish basketball player, is the mastermind behind Byredo and its line of candles and perfumes. The idea behind his fragrances is to connect scent and memory, which is essentially what the entire Replica collection is intended to do. Gorham just does it better. He doesn't want to merely imitate experiences; he wants people to experience the smallest intricacies of his works. His first perfumes were all inspired by childhood experiences, such as the synesthetic green of his father's cologne.

For his newer scents, he adds the idea or expectation of scents into the fragrances. His newest scent Tulipe plays off the idea that people expect that flower to lack a scent, yet his imagination takes us into his fantasy.

Some of my favorite scents by Gorham are Ambre Japonais and Cotton Poplin, the former being a dark, warm scent that reminds me of everything that the fall season should be. The scent that really sold me was Cotton Poplin, though. For me, the scent evokes memories of Sunday morning laundry in Topeka, Kansas, giving me a light-heartedly sentimental yet valuable nostalgic experience.

Other popular scents include Bibliotheque, a leathery scent, and Rose Noir, which is a heavy floral fragrance. For a limited time, Bibliotheque is also available as a cologne. Usually, the products are available in both perfume and candle versions, but I personally prefer the airy subtlety of the candles.

In terms of price, Byredo products are around $80 per candle and $150 per eau de parfum. They're available at Barney's, Neiman Marcus, and its own online store. Given the steep price tag, it would make for a perfect seasonal or birthday gift.

Youtubers to Watch: Fightmaster Yoga!

If ever you need a free, at-home workout to boost your mood, sooth your stiffness and get your blood flowing, head straight over to Fightmaster Yoga for a plethora of lessons featuring all forms of yoga. Everything from Ashtanga yoga, Hatha yoga, Yin yoga, and Vinyasa yoga, to HIIT (high-intensity interval training) yoga, yoga for fun inversions, heart-opening yoga, and yoga targeting specific areas of your body  is available. There will certainly be something that suits your needs! Leslie Fightmaster produces new videos throughout the week, and her lessons will bring you everything from a drenching sweat, to an all-encompassing sense of calm, if not both!

As someone who has experimented with a wide range of free online yoga lessons, I have to say that Leslie's courses easily surpass them all. Many yoga instructors talk as they perform yoga, and pant as they narrate their every movement with harsh, aggressive voices; however, Leslie adds her narration in the editing process, and her gentle voice eases you into each of the movements as you follow along in bliss.

It was indeed only with Leslie's gentle guidance that I made my way towards full handstands, headstands, and forward splits after practicing with her workouts day after day. I personally find them a great way to get your blood flowing first thing in the morning, or as an afternoon pick-me-up, or a workout to boost my energy levels if I know I have a long night ahead.

Screen Shot 2017-05-10 at 12.51.45 PM.png

She does her yoga in all forms of natural, outdoor locales as well as her own house, so as you workout in the comfort of your home, it is almost as if you also get the opportunity to shift your mind to the new , often refreshing, locations alongside her.

My personal favorite videos are her Yoga to Twist, Detox, and Purify advanced yoga video as well as the Yoga Energizing Flow and day 11 of her #yogafix90 series. I've watched these videos over 100 times. Leslie does a number of continuous series of yoga videos, in which she posts a new video everyday and followers are urged to follow along. The #yogafix90 series, as its name suggests, is 90 days long; her other series include the Yoga for Beginners 30 Day Challenge and 30 Days of Hatha Yoga Happiness.

Some of her video lessons also involve spending the entire lesson preparing your body for a particularly challenging move. Be it the side crane pose, firefly, or twisted crow, with Leslie's thoughtful guidance, however, anything becomes possible with enough practice and once your body is sufficiently warmed up.

In my eyes, the colors in her videos are always beautifully rendered and that, combined with her smooth flow design and the perfect mix of challenge and relaxation in her videos, makes me keep coming back for more.

At times, when I know I only have 20 minutes before class, I'll fit in one of her 10-15 minute yoga quickies, and those alone are sufficient to wake my mind up fully before I spend hours sitting dormant in lectures.

Screen Shot 2017-05-10 at 12.50.46 PM.png

Though her videos are completely free, there is also the option to donate, for it is with such donations that Leslie continues to produce high-quality videos and content. Do comment on her videos! Leslie replied in less than a day, two years ago, when I commented on one of my personal favorites. Check out her channel here for daily doses of happiness, calm, and flexibility!

Where & Wear: Dusek's

Known for hosting the 2nd Fridays event every month, Pilsen is where the Chicago art scene resides. If you are tired of the similar scenes in West Loop, Downtown, or River North, you might try the unique vibe of Pilsen. Filled with cute contemporary art galleries, murals and examples of public art in the streets, Pilsen has the perfect scenery for a Saturday stroll.

All photos via

Dusek's is the perfect address for you to start your day in Pilsen. This hidden gem of the neighborhood is renowned enough to have a Michelin star, but they offer this amazing tasting experience for reasonable prices. I would definitely recommend you to try out their brunch menu and pair your food selection with one of their delicious beermosas. "Crab Cake Benedict" is great for seafood lovers, while "Green Tomato Shakshuka" can be a great choice for vegetarians. If you really want something hearty and juicy, "Juicy Lucy" will satisfy your cravings. "Ricotta and Honey Beignets" is a great starter to share with your friends with its creamy and velvet texture. For the beermosas, IPA (New Belgium Citradelic, luxardo apricot, OJ, lime) and their Brunch Punch were our favorites.

The clothes are from Zara, Urban Outfitters, Massimo Dutti and COS.

Dusek's is a great place for your Saturday brunch plans with the girls or for your group outings so make sure you go there this spring. A loose blouse in pastel colors and light colored pants will be a great outfit to easily blend in this artsy corner of the city.

What's In My Bag: Belle

The Bags

Herschel Supply Co. Backpack

I wish I could rock some of the pastel colored backpacks Herschel has, but I'm a pretty monochromatic person and a plain black backpack just makes things easier. My Herschel Backpack is my staple piece for school. After carrying a leather tote everyday for two years, I needed to give my shoulders a break. This backpack is not only lightweight, it's super capacious. I typically carry two notebooks, my planner, one or two books, and my 15in. MacBook Pro and there's still space for more. I got my backpack from Urban Outfitters' mens section. Head over to the UO downtown or click on the link above to check out Herschel's other models!

Balenciaga Giant 12 Gold Mini City

I am obsessed with bags and purses and WOCs and totes but I always find my way to my Balenciaga Mini City. I carry it LITERALLY. EVERYWHERE. For brunch in the city, traveling, or hanging out with friends, this is what you want. The Balenciaga mini city is so sturdy and holds surprisingly much for its size. Its black and gold color scheme goes with every outfit. If you're like me and likes to wear black on black on black, this Balenciaga is the perfect way to add an accent to your outfit without really trying. I recommend going for the lambskin rather than other leather for this bag, just because the toughness keeps the purse's shape better and longer.

Moleskine 18 Month Academic Planner

I use this planner on the daily to remind myself of assignment due dates and deadlines. For me, having a physical copy of my reminders help me stay on top of things. It is oddly satisfying when I checkmark every task I've completed!

There is also an 18-month calendar in this planner, which I use to mark dates I travel and multi-day events.

MUJI. MUJI. MUJI. Need I say more? I'm obsessed with the simplicity of their products. The ink also flows super nicely.  Muji Online Store US

For Everyday Wear

Skincare/Cosmetics:

Mario Badescu Rose Water Spray                           L'Occitane Hand Cream

This Mario Badescu Rose Water is the bomb. I spray it on my face and hair more often than needed, but why not? The spray contains aloe and keeps my skin hydrated and refreshed throughout the day. I also use it to set my makeup sometimes if I'm only wearing some bronzer and don't want my face to feel heavy. If you're wearing a full face make up, though, this Urban Decay Setting Spray will keep you matte for the long day (or night).

I have very dry hands, especially during the winter. I carry a travel size L'Occitane hand cream with me at all times. This product has one of the highest Shea butter content among all hand creams on the market (so I was told by a Sephora shopper), so it keeps my hands moisturized and soft.

Fresh Sugar Lip Therapy                                    Tom Ford Lipstick in Indian Rose

This Fresh lip balm is honestly amazing. It has a subtle citrus scent and reminds me of a lemon sorbet. It is also a light weight base for my lipstick, hydrating my lips without adding too much oil that can prevent the lip color from setting in.

I'm obsessed with the shade Indian Rose by Tom Ford. It's a combination of a metallic finish and a creamy dusty rose color. It's great for everyday wear but also goes well with a heavier eye makeup.

Electronics:

myCharge Portable Charger with Chords and Built-in Wall Prongs

I got this portable charger as I was waiting to board at O'Hare. It is truly a lifesaver. It's carry-on sage!  The built-in chords and wall prongs make my life so much easier and I don't even have to worry about bringing my charger or untangling the chord. This portable charger can charge my iPhone 6s up to 4 times. It also recharges super fast when plugged into the wall.
