Painting The Lips Red: Thoughts on Red Lips

Well, with February coming to a close and Valentine’s Day already feeling like an eternity behind us, with Christmas basically a distant memory, it seems like a weird time for me to be writing about red lips. Like, Ale, we’re about to enter Spring; we have pastels for Easter and green for St. Patrick’s Day to look forward to. Why are you bringing up red lips? To which I reply, I’ve just been thinking about them a lot recently, especially after watching Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s makeup tutorial on Youtube, which had been sitting in my “Watch Later” folder for months. Like AOC, I love a good red lip; some of my earliest memories involve me going into my grandmother’s makeup stash and applying her signature shiny red lipstick to look like her. As a four-year-old, I thought that as an adult, I would be wearing red lipstick every day, like my grandmother, and could not wait to be an adult so I could do that.

Reality, however, is quite different. I usually reserve the red lipstick for special occasions, performances, or going out; I’ve never worn red lipstick to class or on a day that I was just “hanging out.” Usually, there was some sort of occasion, even if it was just going downtown or out to dinner. Then I started thinking: why don’t I wear red lipstick all the time? It’s not like I don’t like it; every time I wear red lipstick, I feel powerful and confident and ready to take on the world, but it’s something more. When thinking about my article on uniforms, I realized that it goes back to not wanting to stand out too much. I exist in a weird limbo of wanting to be noticed for looking cute in my makeup but not wanting to draw attention to myself. And red lipstick is quite literally a bright red attention-grabber.

Then I started thinking about why I wear makeup at all; I wear it for myself, that much is evident by the lipstick and foundation stains in my mask at the end of each day, even if no one sees the full look except my roommates and me. So, if I’m just wearing the makeup for myself, why should it matter what people think about my red-painted lips? I guess that makes sense in theory, but in practice, that’s where it gets complicated, and it all goes back to me wanting to be noticed but not wanting to stand out.

But then I think: my grandmother wears red lipstick every day, and it’s nothing out of the ordinary since we’re so used to it, so if I were to wear red lipstick often, would people just not even give it a second thought? I suppose so, but what about the first few times? That’s the hardest part, I think. When you start doing what you want or wearing what you want, people around you will notice, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing. Life is too short to not wear what you want, and think of your four-year-old self who was so excited to be an adult and wear red lipstick every day. I’m sure she would smile at you widely with her lipstick-stained teeth.

Comeback of the Year: Gucci Beauty

Gucci’s Creative Director Alessandro Michele is no stranger to being unconventional and tastefully excessive, and Gucci Beauty is the epitome of both. Using models with smiles that would not conventionally be featured on makeup campaigns, Michele was able to address the issue of changing beauty standards in the fashion industry. Under the direction of English makeup artist Thomas de Kluyver as the brand’s Global Makeup Artist, the aesthetic for the relaunch of Gucci Beauty is completely unexpected. In keeping with Michele’s vision, Kluyver incorporated old-Hollywood glamour into the packaging. By incorporating lead singer of the Brooklyn-based punk band Surfbort, Dani Miller, into the makeup campaign, Gucci’s comeback into the makeup world is anything but ordinary.

Gucci originally launched its makeup collection in 2014. With ex-Creative Director Frida Giannini and famed makeup artist Pat McGrath behind the original collection, the full range of makeup products offered was approved by makeup artists around the world. However, the brand halted its makeup line in 2016, with brands like Glossier, Huda Beauty, and Too Faced swiftly filling in the space that Gucci Beauty had once filled in the makeup world.

However, with a lipstick launch encompassing 58 different shades, Gucci Beauty showed that it is back and better than ever. At $38 a pop, these lipsticks are priced relatively similar to other high fashion brands such as Chanel and Tom Ford. These lipsticks are exclusively available online for now, so check them out here!

Your Go-To Fall Lip Colors

With pumpkin spice season in full force and all other excusable situations to wear open toe booties, fall is by far my favorite season of the year. The seasonal theme welcomes back some unique shades of lip color in my collection that I save exclusively for this weather.

Here are my four favorite go-to lip colors for the fall and my pairings for eye looks:

YSL Tint-in Balm in Call me Rose

This may be my favorite formula for lip color. The application is so smooth, not overwhelmingly pigmented, and has a clean look. Call me Rose is a subtle pink that will highlight your natural lip color. It’ll be the perfect complement for a halo eye, or a classic winged eye look.

Tarte Quick Dry Matte Lip Paint in Low Key

Tarte’s quick dry matte lip paints are great because it has full coverage application with no budge. I love the shade Low Key because it’s the perfect nude shade to contrast a darker eye look for a dramatic effect or a natural no-makeup look. If Low Key looks too light and risky for your tastes, go a shade down in Festival.

Laura Mercier Velour Lovers in Voyeur (purple plum)

I never tried out Laura Mercier lip products until recently. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was as happy with its lip products as I was with its classic translucent setting powder. It is a light matte lipstick that wears for hours and doesn’t get messy throughout the day. If you set the lip with the setting powder, it lasts even longer. This is by far the darkest shade I’ve experimented with, but purple plum is a great dark shade to match a strong contour look for a night out.

MAC in Touch (peachy cinnamon)

This shade will go perfectly with any autumn-tone makeup look. The warm tone has enough of a shiny finish to brighten darker eye looks. MAC’s lipsticks are pretty standard and I have no complaints about the formula. You really can’t go wrong with this one.

Beauty Brand Review: Glossier Lip Products

If you haven't lusted over one of Glossier's overpriced albeit nicely packaged beauty or skincare products by now, I applaud you. I've been debating purchasing their products since the brand launched several years ago and finally caved earlier this month. I've received some of their skincare products in the past as gifts, but I've always wanted to try out their beauty options and lip products are usually pretty fool proof!

Balm Dotcom

I decided on the Cherry Balm Dotcom (which reportedly smells like "fun tangy cherry candies, the perfect playlist, and three-day weekends") because I figured if I was going to spend $12 on a lip balm, it might as well be tinted in order to double as a lip tint or lipgloss. The Balm Dotcom comes in five versions: rose (which is also slightly tinted according to the website), mint, cherry, coconut and the original flavorless and scentless balm.

The site claims that this universal skin salve is a cult favorite "packed with antioxidants and natural emollients to nourish and repair dry, chafed skin." The product is advertised as providing a hydrating, dewy sheen packed with ingredients like beeswax, castor seed oil, rice bran and rosemary leaf extracts, and something called Cupuaçu fruit extract (for "an organic, long-lasting moisturizer with Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids that melts into skin on contact").

The packaging of this product is potentially it's biggest selling point. I was a little put off by how overwhelming the cherry smell is. It's not entirely unpleasant, but I would definitely recommend putting on as little as you need so the sickly sweet smell doesn't give you a headache. The formula itself is pretty waxy and doesn't dissolve or wipe off immediately like other balms do. I would probably recommend this as more of a moisturizing mask you wear on your lips before bed rather than a day-to-day lip product. It gave my lips a slight tint and glossy sheen. If I could select a different balm I would probably go for the mint flavor or the scentless/flavorless version.

Generation G

I bought the Generation G matte lipstick in Crush because I wanted a shade that would be buildable off my lip's natural color. There are a ton of shades to choose from, however, whether you want something bright and cheery like Zip (a flirty red shade), a range of more subdued pink options like Jam, Crush or Like, or something more suited for day-to-day wear, such as the warm toned Leo and Cake. Regardless of the color you choose, the pigments are intended to be fairly strong and result in a buildable, matte-like effect.

According to the website, these lip tints are also hypoallergenic and made with a range of cool sounding ingredients like triple coated mica, a "finely-milled mineral that gives matte finish and silky glide," or blue agave, which "binds water inside lips for comfortable wear".

Crush really is a nice, pinky neutral color and overall I am very pleased with the shade. I was definitely expecting more product for $18 since the tube itself is pretty small and I'm not sure how long it will last. The Glossier site definitely stresses how buildable the product is because you can't really tell the difference between your normal lip color and the actual product with only one or two swipes. I blend my Generation G with my favorite Burt's Bees chapstick, which makes application easier and seems to hold the pigment better.

If you're interested in trying out a Generation G for yourself, definitely pick one of the darker or more vibrant colors. Neutral shades such as Like, Leo or Cake will barely register. It achieves a certain matte/natural finish as advertised, but definitely doesn't glide on as silkily as the site claims. Overall, I would have appreciated a more pigmented product that requires less layering.

Still a little unsure about trying out a Glossier product? Use this code for 10% off your first order! Happy shopping :)

5 Kiss-Proof Lipsticks

With Valentine's Day around the corner, smudge-proof lipstick is in order. Here, MODA has gathered the most lasting lipsticks to keep your lips looking perfect through the whole day!

Smashbox Always On Matte Lipstick

Matte liquid lipsticks tend to dry your lips out easily, but these ones don't suck the life out of your lips. The applicator is pointy at the tip which makes it easy to control (and you don't need a lip liner)! Once it sets, there is no budging. My favorite colors include Driver's Seat, Stepping Out, and Out Loud. Buy here!

Kat Von D Everlasting Lipstick

Everyone and their mother has probably heard of this lipstick, but that's because it is SO good. Extremely pigmented and creamy, this lipstick dries down to a nice matte finish fast. Some great shades are Bow and Arrow, Lolita, and Lolita II. Buy here.

Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain

At just half the price of a normal lipstick, Sephora Collection knocks it out of the ball park with its smooth texture and color payoff (and choices)! Some of my favorite colors are Marvelous Mauve, Blackberry Sorbet, and Always Red. Buy here.

Tarte Tarteist Quick Dry Matte Lip

This lipstick is extremely full coverage and dries down instantly so that there's no transfer. And you can always guarantee you're putting on all natural ingredients with a brand like Tarte! Some beautiful shades are Bestie and Delish. Buy here.

YSL Vinyl Cream Lip Stain

There are pricier but they last for up to 10 hours. These are high shine, so they don't dry your lips out. Even when the gloss wears off, the color stains your lips, so there's no need to reapply! My favorite color out of all of them is Carmin Session. Buy here.

Beauty Brand Review: Giorgio Armani Lip Magnet

I recently got the Giorgio Armani Lip Magnet Liquid Lipstick in purple mauve as a gift, and I instantly fell in love. I have been looking for a darker, plum shade to add to my collection, and this definitely makes the cut.

The packaging is quite simple: a red top and a clear bottom (so that you can easily see the color). It's perfect for those lazy girls who don't really want to bother pulling open the top open to see the color. The doe-foot applicator is actually pointed, which makes the application a lot more smooth. You can use the wider end to apply a broad amount but the point makes it easy to get the corners or even line the lips.

The product is buildable, so depending on the look you want, you can go for either a more sheer or opaque matte look. It also lasts several hours, and even passed the (Thanksgiving) food and drink test for me! Personally, I really enjoy liquid lipsticks because they're easy to apply and more user-friendly, and the lip magnet completely embodies this description.

Once on your lips, the product is really lightweight and doesn't smudge too much. However, because it is a matte product, do not forget to wear chapstick underneath or else your dry lip lines might show.  Overall though, I think this is super student-friendly and completely worth the somewhat hefty price tag.

The Lip Magnets comes in a variety of colors, ranging from bright reds to deep purples, so pick your poison!

Lip Product of the Week: Meet Matt(e) Hughes

I have a deep love-hate relationship with liquid lipsticks. On one hand, they can be drying and harshly exaggerate the fine lines on our lips. They can also wear awfully, and reapplying them can be a *****. But on the other, I love the clean, matte finish it gives. I've tried almost every liquid lipstick under the roof: Colorpop, Anastasia, Kat Von D. But the one that has stood out to me as the crown winner is The Balm's Meet Matt(e) Hughes.

I have this in the shade Committed as well as Adoring. Committed is a nudish pink that goes well with any make-up look, especially a summery bronze one. Adoring is definitely a statement lip, as it is a deep burgundy red.

When applied, Meet Matt(e) Hughes stays on for quite some time. It lasted me through a 3.5 hour Cubs game that included a hot dog, nachos, and ice cream. And even if it does fade, reapplying is easy. The formula does not clump; it's incredibly easy to apply. There's even a slight peppermint feel which I love.

The best part is that this is available on Amazon (Prime shipping yes), so I can get this whenever I want!
