Fendi Reclaims the "It Bag" Throne

This Spring, Fendi is riding the nostalgia wave by bringing back one of its most iconic creations: the Baguette. The purse debuted in 1997, was notably the first bag to be given its own stylistic name and quickly dominated the cultural zeitgeist, becoming synonymous with status and glamour. The Baguette jumpstarted the “personality” purse phenomenon, becoming one of the first “it bags” that every self proclaimed fashionista had to have. Fendi’s move follows in the footsteps of Dior, who brought back their equally legendary Saddle Bag last year.

The dynamic and often ostentatious designs were a novelty on the minimalistic 90s purse market; “the diametric opposite of the wildly popular and utilitarian nylon backpacks from Prada that predated it,” as Vogue puts it. The Baguette’s slender form came in 1,000 style variations, from denim to bead encrusted to leather, and graced the shoulders of glitterati such as Elizabeth Taylor, who owned at least eighteen.

The last decade has seen a fast paced social media culture dominate the fashion industry, with brands falling out of public acclaim with the click of a button. It’s easy to see why fashion houses are leaning back on their decades-old cultural capital in order to stay on top and remind younger consumers why they’re so legendary.

And Fendi’s cultural capital is quite extensive–it exploded into the pop culture scene when taste making show Sex and the City featured the bag as an essential fashion statement. In one episode, style icon Carrie Bradshaw was mugged and proceeded to school her robber–and the world–when she declared that her purse is not just a bag, “its a Baguette!” Sarah Jessica Parker herself reprised the legendary line in a recent ad for the bag, reclaiming and reviving that loaf of a purse the world fell in love with all those years ago. #BaguetteFriendsForever.

What's In My Bag: Olive

What are the essentials that the MODA bloggers carry from class to class and around downtown? This quarter we will be featuring each blogger's personal bag and their favorite items to stow and use, as well as where to find these products. So what can't the fashionable bloggers of MODA not live without?

Over winter break, my mom showed me a bag she found at a sample sale. I loved it. Fuzzy, patterned, and slightly impractical - it seemed only fitting to brighten the cold Chicago winter days ahead. I've used it most all quarter, and have only opted for my regular sturdy North Face backpack when it's rainy or snowing.

This backpack is definitely smaller than my normal bag, so I've had to be strategic with what I place in it. I'm also quite sure it was not developed to hold a laptop, textbook, and notebooks, and am terrified of breaking the straps with a heavy load. This backpack only has the outside pocket, the main space, and a tiny pocket at the back of the bag.

  • Even though I mainly rely on Google Calendar to organize my classes and weekly schedule, I love using a physical planner (I use Kate Spade's 17 month planner) to take notes and set goals for the week or month.
  • I've started using colorful page flags to organize my binder and notebooks - especially when prepping for midterms, it's so handy to go back and review chapter by chapter!
  • I also have started carrying a portable charger and USB cord wherever I go, since the weather has been making my phone die quickly lately. The charger is small and lightweight, which is perfect for emergencies!
  • Though I carry all my day-to-day cards (bank card, ID, U-Pass) on the back of my phone, I still make sure to bring a wallet along just in case I end up needing cash at the Div school for coffee or use that odd gift card to cover a purchase. This Kate Spade wallet is the perfect size to hold all my daily necessities!

I don't do well without a sugar boost every few hours, and so I always carry a variety of snacks with me. This week, I've been snacking on Kind bars (Vanilla Blueberry), Trader Joe's Organic Roasted Teriyaki Seaweed Snacks, Haribo gummy bears (Watermelon), and an apple pie Larabar.

I prepare for all weather conditions - sunglasses for the rare days when the sun does come out, earmuffs and a basic beanie hat for when the cold slaps me the minute I walk out the door. My skin gets really delicate in the winter, so I always carry lip balm (Korres Pomegranate Lip Butter for a little color) and hand lotion to minimize dryness. I also have gotten into the habit of packing a roller ball (this week it's Marc Jacob's Daisy) in my bag to perk up during a long day of classes or a long stint at the Reg. For when it's gonna be a long night, I pick up my hair with a scrunchie to focus and buckle down.
