Spring Break Stories

MODA bloggers traveled far and wide this Spring Break–keep reading for a roundup of our favorite stops along the way!

Olivia  ✈️️   Amsterdam

Amsterdam is incredible! There are plenty of things to see and explore around the city, but it's easily navigable and small enough that you can accomplish alot even if you're only there for a couple of days. The world renowned Rijksmuseum is a must-see for art lovers–be sure to stop by their café after strolling through the galleries for delicious cakes by Amsterdam's famous Patisserie HoltkampSTACH food has great sandwiches, treats and healthy food for on-the-go. Also keep a look out for Pluk (a beautiful, airy café) and Meneer Nieges (a bar and restaurant that attracts a lot of young locals for its riverside views and avant-garde art installations) as well.

Amsterdam is best explored on foot (or bike!), so save the bulk of your time to wander the streets and canals and discover the city for yourself. Vondelpark is perfect for strolling and located in the beautiful Museum District. The De 9 Straatjes (The 9 Districts) is home to countless vintage stores, antique shops and coffeeshops. The city definitely caters to a young international crowd and public transport is seamless, but watch out for the lack of traffic lights when you cross the street!

Nivedina ✈️️   Dallas

I spent my first full day of spring break at the Dallas Museum of Art, where a new exhibit called “México 1900-1950” features the works of Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, José Clemente Orozco, Ángel Zárraga, Tina Modotti and David Alfaro Siqueiros as part of a survey of Mexico’s modern art history. This collection, which made its only American stop in Dallas, is breathtaking. There are paintings, and sculptures, and films and newspaper articles, all featuring women, children, indigenous people, queer people and families. There is so much color and there is so much history. Despite many of the artists having lived and worked in Paris and Germany, the art they produced upon their return to Mexico amplifies themes of Mexican nationality, traditions and dreams.

Among my favorite pieces was David Alfaro Siqueiros’ 1935 “Portrait of María Asúnsolo Descending a Staircase/Retrato de María Asúnsolo bajando la escalera.” Inspired by Duchamp’s “Nude Descending the Staircase,” Siqueiros’ painting is both dramatic and delicate. Also like Duchamp’s painting, the portrait of María freezes an instant in which everything is in motion. Before seeing this piece, I didn’t understand how a painting, which hangs still on a wall, could be dynamic and full of motion. Siqueiros shows this so beautifully, with the contrasts between the red curtains and the dark shadows, as well as the sharp black staircase against María’s luminous white dress. But my favorite part of the work isn’t the staircase, or the curtains, or even María. It’s in the bottom right, where Siqueiros scrawled “C.T.M.E.Y.M.C,” which stands for “con toda mi estimación y mi cariño,” (with all my appreciation and affection).

Connor  ✈️️   Chicago

Despite the title, I actually only spent about three days in Chicago, which was home base for getting out to different forests in the Midwest. Nature remained in an undecided state where it stayed warm(ish) out while the trees were still barren for the most part. Got two (count em, two) good pictures of owners with their dogs.

I capped out the week with seeing the Chicago production of Hamilton, which preceded itself in every way. The vocals, choreography, and design worked in perfect harmony with the Pulitzer-winning lyrics to create a show that met and then went far beyond all the hype. Also Wayne Brady (playing Aaron Burr) did a freestyle at the end that was 💯.

Laden  ✈️️   Istanbul

As an Istanbulite for 21 years now, it is still fascinating to me how much my beloved city has to offer. Every time I go back, I manage to find more hidden gems in the narrow and tired streets of this historic city. As a native, I would definitely recommend you to go to the touristic areas first. And if you have time and energy left, here are some of the newly popular stops where locals spend their time.

A little outside of the historical peninsula, Balat is returning to its glory days during the Ottoman Empire. The Jewish neighborhood of the past has been recently renovated and you can find many cute coffeeshops, vintage shops and restaurants. If you want to hang out in the Galata Tower area a little more after visiting the old city, make sure to check the hip places where the working class chill after a long day. The Nardis Jazz Club is definitely worthy competition for some of your favorite Chicago jazz clubs. Named after one of Miles Davis' songs, the internationally renowned club (and also the only club in Istanbul that The New York Times recommends) has an intimate atmosphere.

Where & Wear: Summer House Santa Monica

If you're looking to take a break from Chicago and take a quick trip to La La Land (aka the City of Angels), get brunch at Summer House Santa Monica! My favorite thing about Summer House Santa Monica is the atmosphere--everything is bright and white. Sunshine spills through the roof, making it the perfect place to get your brunch on.

If you're not looking to eat a full meal, you can also stop by their bakery for some fresh-baked goods ranging from muffins and giant cinnamon rolls to cookies and brownies. But if you are staying for a hearty brunch, I definitely recommend one of their breakfast hashes. I also enjoy their avocado toast and their chicken & waffle.

Wear something spring or summery to brunch! As the weather is lightening up (hopefully), so should your wardrobe. We love this striped off-the-shoulder top from Madewell to pair with some comfy jeans. Or, wear a cute set of co-ords like this one from Reformation.

Chitown Spring Break Bucket List: Pt. 2

If you are like me, the short break doesn't warrant a trip all the way back home. Whereas I get to spend the first half of break doing UCSC's Alternative Spring Break Program (go check it out it's great), I still have the second half open to the Windy City. What is there to do for a college student in the big city? Here are 5 things that are worth checking out:

1) The Hampton Social for a nice brunch/lunch

If you are looking for the perfect place to take Instagram-worthy and aesthetically-pleasing photos, you have found it! This gorgeous location up North has a lovely selection of meat, seafood, drinks, and everything in between that is sure to crave your hunger while you admire the captivating lights and decor of the restaurant.

My friend and me at brunch this past week!

2) Naperville Riverwalk for a lovely stroll

This beautiful riverwalk has it all - a nice playground to reminisce on your childhood, a bridge that cross over the water, and many ducks to wave at. Trailing from the bridge is downtown Naperville filled with window shops and cute restaurant to grab a bite at!

3) Garfield Park Observatory to just wander

As one of the largest and most beloved conservatories in the nation, Garfield Park Observatory will take your breath away. Often referenced as "landscape art under glass", walk around the two acres full of life and tropical temperatures to get away from the brisk weather that is notorious in Chicago!

4) Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary to see some birds and capture a beautiful landscape

Ranked number one by Illinois Birders Exchange Thoughts, this is Chicago's most diverse bird area with 329 species documented. Gather to bird-watch, but make sure to take time to appreciate the beautiful view of the city.

5) Blue Chicago to enjoy some live music

If you are itchy to get some soulful tunes and something Chicago is known for, Blue Chicago is the way to go. Not far from Magnificient Mile, this swanky place is a hot spot that usually brings female vocalists that can really sing the blues. The cover is usually $8-10, well worth the fantastic blues!

How To Pack for Study Abroad

Full disclosure - I haven't even started packing for my quarter abroad yet. I'm set to study abroad in Vienna this spring, and I couldn't be more excited! As finals begin to approach and the reality of living in a different continent becomes more and more tangible, I've started to think about how exactly I'll get everything I need to get to Europe. After asking around for advice from upperclassmen who have been through the experience, I think I'm ready.

1. Do research on the climate you'll be in, pack accordingly.

Vienna in the spring crosses late winter, spring, and early summer seasons - meaning I'll be packing jackets, sweaters, boots - and dresses, sandals, and shorts. I'll probably end up taking a larger suitcase and a duffle bag to ensure that I have the right clothes for the right weather.

2. Don't take more than 2 suitcases.

Imagine the stress of trying to run around in O'Hare or Midway with three gigantic suitcases trying to make a flight. Now imagine if you're in an airport you've never been before, you don't speak the language, and you're by yourself - or with other students who have just as much luggage as you do. Thankfully, 10 weeks isn't too long to survive on minimal clothing.

3. Bring some light stuff to customize your new dorm room.

Without bringing huge pillows or items that will just take up extra space in your luggage, make sure to slip in some small posters or pictures to make your new room feel a bit more like home.

399 Likes, 3 Comments - Fjällräven Official NA (@fjallravenusa) on Instagram: "The forest green/ox red Kånken... perfect for every #sundayfunday adventure. #kanken..."

4. Leave space for stuff you'll pick up while abroad.

Packing your bags full of clothes and items from home will leave no space for anything that you want to buy while abroad. I'd be crushed if I had to buy another piece of luggage to fit new clothes or worse, have to leave clothes behind to fit in new ones.

5. Bring sturdy walking shoes.

So underrated. The Athens Civ program, for example, is well known for having a lot of hiking excursions as a part of the academic programming they offer. Running shoes will be your friend in this case - they'll be lighter, smaller, and more fashionable than hiking boots. For most other programs, you can expect there will be walking tours of some sort, so plan on bringing comfortable shoes to protect your feet.

6. Make sure you have the products you need before you leave the US.

International shipping is expensive. If you're running low on your favorite tinted moisturizer or cleanser, make sure to stock up before leaving the US. No need to bring basic shampoo and soap though - they'll just take up space in your luggage and you'll be better off buying it once you're at your location.

7. Don't forget the essentials.

While traveling in a new country, make sure you have the tools you need to communicate - even if you don't speak the language! Important paper materials like a pocket dictionary for the local language, and a map of where you'll be staying, will come in handy when you have to use them. Though it might seem like inconsequential items, having the resources to navigate and communicate in an environment where your cell phone might not even work will help you in emergency and non-emergency situations.

11 Apps For Adulting 101

There's no point in trying to deny that for most of us, our cellphone is basically an extension of our hands or about as vital as oxygen for our day-to-day functioning. Go beyond Snapchat or Instagram (aka the easiest way to turn a 5 minute "study break" into a 40 minute scroll session) and check out the following apps that make being (an almost) grown up that much easier.

Finance

Image via

Image via

  • Mint: Get a handle on your personal finances with this handy app that brings together all the different aspects of your financial life. Track your daily spending, pay bills, and keep an eye on your credit score all in one spot. Mint even offers weekly summaries and warnings when you go over the budget you set for yourself.
  • Splitwise: Think of it as Venmo for grown-ups. Splitwise helps you split shared expenses with roommates so that everyone pays their fair share. It also includes helpful reminder emails and redirects money owed as needed.
  • Plates: Actually integrated into the Splitwise app, Plates makes the tricky task of splitting the bill between friends at dinner that much easier. Simply enter each dish, including shared appetizers and such, and Plates will calculate how much everyone owes counting tip and taxes.
  • Robinhood: While that #brokecollegelife feeling may be all too real, it's never too soon to start investing, even if you only set aside coffee money once a week or use a birthday check. Robinhood lets you trade stocks without charging a commission fee and stay on top of your portfolio with real time market data and notifications for important market events.

Political

Image via

Image via

  • Countable: If 2016 was the year of realizing anything, it's that politics matter and you can have an impact. Register your voting district on Countable, select the issues that matter to you the most and you will be notified about upcoming related bills and how to get in touch with your local representatives.
  • Politico: The election may be over, but stay in the know all year round with the app from this non-partisan news source. With a focus on the White House and Congress, the app includes extensive article coverage, videos and morning newsletters.
  • Buypartisan: Put your money where your mouth is with the Buypartisan app that scans product barcodes and displays the political donations of the company's CEO, Board of Directors and employees.

Useful

  • Sleep Cycle: While it might be a badge of honor at UChicago to boast about how little sleep you got, sleep is a vital part of any healthy lifestyle. Sleep Cycle tracks your sleep to wake you up at the lightest part of your cycle so that you start the day feeling fresh and well-rested.
  • Myfitnesspal: Hop back on the healthy New Year's resolutions bandwagon with this app, which allows you to set fitness goals and helps you achieve them. Track what you eat with a calorie counter that has food from grocery stores and nearby restaurants on hand.
  • Tiny Scanner: Turn your iPhone into a portable scanner and always have your important documents saved as PDFs in your pocket. An easy to use interface allows you to easily share documents, adjust the brightness, and even password protect the most important documents.
  • Cam Card: Keep track of the business cards you accumulate during the eternal internship hunt with Cam Card which allows you to scan cards, exchange e-cards, and manage your professional contacts with tags, notes and a search function.
