AG Jeans x Blanda: Celebrating Women, Water, and the Human Experience

In celebration of World Water Day, AG Jeans recently announced a collaboration with Swiss-born artist Blanda Eggenschwiler. The limited-edition capsule collection is a celebration of “women, water, and the human experience.” In order to celebrate those three concepts, AG sought to work on water conservation, clean water access, and plastic waste reduction. The collection with Blanda represents AG’s efforts to become more sustainable as it was produced using AG’s new state-of-the-art water filtration system. The Los Angeles-based denim brand has always showed a commitment to sustainability in fashion, as evidenced by their use of Ozone Technology in reducing water consumption during the process of producing their attire. With the new filtration system, water waste is even more dramatically reduced; water waste has been cut down from the industry standard of 380,000 gallons per day to a mere 1,200 gallons.

According to Blanda, “Each piece in the collection is filled with complexity and symbolism that speak to the concept of cause and effect noted in Newton’s Third Law.” Two of the designs include the “Third Mind” and “The Totem,” which symbolize women and sustainability, respectively.

As a pioneer in the sustainable fashion world, AG Jeans continually shows their support in conserving the earth’s resources. Most recently, the denim brand partnered with Boxed Water Is Better, which seeks to package all of its water in 100% recyclable materials. Through this partnership, AG estimates that it will be saving 73,000 plastic bottles per year.

In a world dominated by buzzwords such as “sustainability” and “eco-friendly,” it is novel to have a brand that actually puts its money where its mouth is. By investing in a new filtration system and partnering with other companies with the same vision of promoting sustainable practices both inside the fashion world and outside, AG Jeans is showing that initiative must be taken in order to achieve any change.

Well, That's Cheeky!

Have you ever felt so angsty that you wanted to channel your inner grunge by wearing a Thrasher t-shirt (even though you’ve definitely never even read a page of that magazine) and throwing on some distressed jeans? Yeah, it’s just SO edgy, but it's not edgy enough anymore! Well, fashion pushes boundaries and I present to you, absolutely no boundaries. It's the next big thing.

Thong jeans!

Yes, that’s right! These jeans more or less look like your distressed jeans either had existential crises of their own and are now destroyed or you accidentally got into a war with a barbed wire fence and made it out with just enough fabric to pass for a piece that is entirely overall straps and zero percent overalls. No longer do you have to worry about whether your jeans are proper enough for the school dress code or your parent’s approval. These “pants” are everything you’ve ever wanted: wearing pants while not wearing pants. How cheeky!

Thibaut grabbed the spotlight at Amazon Fashion Week in Tokyo with this piece, which adds to my long list of things that confuse me (see Balenciaga’s entire existence lately and all other variations of strange jeans here). Paired with some intentionally dirty sneakers, this outfit caught the attention of Twitter.

I’m an avid no pants person, but that personal philosophy of mine is specifically restricted to the safety of my own room due to societal perceptions on propriety. There’s no way I would want to wear these let alone catch anyone wearing these literal strips of denim.

Maybe I’m just too traditional? Considering the fashion industry nowadays, anything seems to pass.

I have too many questions here. Are you supposed to be wearing spandex with these? What season is this appropriate for? Thibaut, the brand responsible for this … atrocity, reserves it for their SS18 collection. But, really? By the time I can digest this piece, I'll probably see at least one brave soul donning this across the quad. I'm praying that day never comes.

What do you think?

Interview Series: Kaleb Sullivan of Dearborn Denim & Apparel

Welcome to MODA's Interview Series, where we feature influencers and leaders in the fashion industry in the Chicago area and beyond to discuss their design inspirations, their creative backgrounds and what it means to be a self-starter in the fashion world today.

Local denim boutique Dearborn Denim & Apparel opened in Hyde Park with the intention of bringing unique, high-quality and affordable U.S. made denim and leather goods to the Chicago community. For this year's first Interview Series, Head of Retail Operations at Dearborn, Kaleb Sullivan, walks us through the brand's identity, core values and the exciting projects his team are working on for the future of Dearborn.

Tell us a little about Dearborn Denim & Apparel. What drives the brand’s overall aesthetic? Who is your ideal shopper? What are some cornerstones of Dearborn’s design mentality and vision?

Dearborn Denim is a Made in Chicago Denim company offering Men’s & Women’s jeans & accessories. We have our online store and our new brick & mortar here in Hyde Park (located on 1504 E 53rd St), where we offer exclusive merchandise and discounts not available online.

What drives our brand is a desire to revive the garment manufacturing business in Chicago, and inspire others to make things locally, wherever they might be.

Honestly, anyone is our ideal shopper. Supporting local, made-in-the-USA goods is something we should all do as often as we can!

The cornerstone of our vision is, as already mentioned, to bring back garment manufacturing to Chicago. Regarding our design and aesthetics, we create items that are approachable to all walks of life. You get to feel good about how you look, while also feeling good about how it was made at the same time.

How did you get started in fashion and retail? Were you always interested in more creative fields?

I’ve always been drawn to the more creative side of life, but fashion has always been my field. I really got started, though, through my work at Belmont Army (a large apparel store on the North Side). I learned a lot very quickly, and it helped getting me to where I am today.

What has been one of the biggest milestones in your career so far?

My position as a buyer at my last job. It showed me a very pivotal part of the fashion business of which I thought I knew everything. I was delightfully surprised that I definitely did not.

What is the hardest part and the most rewarding part of working for a small business?

When you’re helping run a business where the product you’re selling is your own, the hardest part and the most rewarding part are very, very close.

For the hardest part–you’re really putting yourself out there by creating something, you have a certain standard you want to meet yourself, and you want to make sure it meets the standards of others. It’s why artists like Prince have vaults of unreleased music, or painters have studios full of canvases that we will never see, because they always felt like it could be even better! Even more perfect! Now I’m not saying we're on Prince’s level, but maybe one day!

What’s next for Dearborn? Are there any exciting launches or projects you can tell us about?

There’s A LOT of exciting stuff I want to tell you about, but there are only a few things I can actually tell you about. Denim Jackets are coming soon, and they look great (I’m already trying to steal the sample)! We also have a new Women’s Fit coming out soon as well, more along the lines of a classic “Boyfriend Jean” fit.

unnamedDD-4.jpg

We're also launching our Recycled Denim line. We’ve already started it with our recycled denim pouches, which consist of our recycled denim, bits of Horween Leather, a YKK zipper, and belt loops on the back to give it that real fanny pack feel. That being said, we will be expanding the Recycled product line into lots of other fun stuff, too. But you’ll have to wait and see!

We’ve got a list of events coming up with local artists, designers, and musicians, for things like in-store meet & greets, performances, and pop-up shops, which will all happen not just here at the store but all around the city! So keep an eye out!

Dressing Classy: Fishnet Tights

Fishnet tights can add an edgy accent to any outfit, show some attitude, or work as a statement piece. But they can be tricky to style without looking over the top. Dip your toes into the trend (literally) with dainty ankle socks or go full on DIY layering for the ultimate sophisticated pinky look. And get yourself a pair of fishnet tights here to start experimenting new ways to spin this quintessential grungy trend.

For a put-together, but still rebellious look, layer your tights under ripped denim jeans, shorts or even a skirt. If you're confident in your DIY skills, you can always distress an old or thrifted pair of jeans and give them new life when paired with your fishnets. The most practical look this is not (hello chilly spring winds) but definitely packs a sartorial punch.

Alternatively, pair with high-waisted bottoms for a playful look that will show off your figure. Styling fishnet tights like this has been recently popularized by street style standouts like Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid, so it's definitely a supermodel-certified look!

If you're less willing to commit to the whole look, opt for fishnet socks instead of tights. Throw on a pair of killer heels for a night out, or simply grab your favorite sneakers for a perfect day-to-day look that still has a little bit of edge.
