Sophie Lou Jacobsen is Turning on the Light

From delicate and colorful teapots to practical and beautiful carafes and vases, Sophie Lou Jacobsen has always worked at the intersection of refinement and whimsy. The Brooklyn artist works primarily in glass and attempts to bring care to the small, important rituals of everyday life: drinking juice, cleaning your home, steeping tea, holding plants in a vase. Jacobsen’s work is accessible and useful, without being utilitarian – each work is unique and delightful.

In the wake of several dark years during COVID-19, Sophie Lou Jacobsen asks questions about light, growth, and joy. Her work is an investigation into the physical properties of joy, the optimism inherent in inanimate objects. Her beautiful turning forms, with playful orbs and winding tubes, are reminiscent of a garden in springtime. It is apparent that Jacobsen is researching what it means to flourish, and if that flourishing is not a result of some great change, but of the beauty and sanctity of small rituals. The vessels that Jacobsen creates are, at their core, simply vessels. They are for holding, drinking, and pouring, but in their careful construction, they serve to introduce intentionality into habitual action.

Though Sophie Lou Jacobsen is known for her bright and whimsical works, this past September she collaborated with Brooklyn design studio In Common With. The result was a breathtaking collection of glassware in a form that is much darker than Jacobsen’s usual work. The sconces and lamps have the trademark form of a Sophie Lou Jacobsen, but feel much more refined – as if the Italian renaissance took place in modern day Brooklyn. The shape and feel of this collection echo themes of growth and joy, but are conspicuously devoid of the signature Sophie Lou Jacobsen feeling, that sense of light.

The collection is seemingly atypical, compared to her other work, until one considers the object itself. With Jacobsen, the object is always just an object, not something to project art and metaphor onto, but something that, by virtue of being itself, is already full of meaning. Jacobsen has moved from vessels for water, to vessels for lights in her current collection. By bringing an aspect of intentionality to an act as usual as turning on a light, Sophie Lou Jacobsen gives us the last piece of the puzzle. In this collection she is providing us with themes of choice, optimism, and warmth. She is asking us to be conscious in our choices, to make our homes beautiful and bright, to aid ourselves in our own growth, and to want to turn on the light.

Indoor Survival Essentials

It’s only gonna get colder from now on.

Despite occasional oscillations in temperature, I have finally come to reconciliation with this harsh fact in November. When we finish the first round of midterms and look away from our laptops, somehow from late summer we have been teletransported straight to early winter.

Seasonal transitions could be rough, especially when we are juggling academics, personal life and career planning (to those in recruiting season, best of luck!) on top of trying to have a social life and full college experience. But hey, holiday season is just around the corner (attention: waves of sales approaching)! More good news for indoor creatures like me-it is finally the time of year we can stay inside as much as we want without feeling missing out.

Before we go out there again and conquer more midterms, papers or interviews, it is essential to fully relax our mind and body (first get that flu shot if you haven’t done so already). To restore our well-being, let’s begin with a rational and moderated retail therapy.

Here is a list of things that instantaneously improve life quality at home/in dorm:

Essential Oils & Diffuser: Who doesn’t love some aromatherapy and creativity? Play with different scents and make your own blends for a good night of sleep, some quality downtime, or anything you want.

Candles: Yes, they are a fire hazard. So remember to put them out! But nothing beats a flickering flame transfusing warmth on a cold winter night! It might sound silly-I love heating my cold hands over the flame, and I believe that candles actually warm up the space. They are also super versatile in terms of room décor-simple white candles can look just as aesthetically pleasing as the fancy ones!

Blanket/throw: Layer and cuddle! You can always use an extra.

Indoor plants: They are instant mood lifters. Pick the right one (calling all these resilient succulents out there) and breathe better. Herbs are also great! I love throwing fresh cut basil leaves into the dish---definitely blown away by how little effort it takes to keep the basil alive and how rewarding it is!

Stay indoors. Stay warm. Stay healthy.

Over-the-Door Hangers

Chicago weather is wildly unpredictable, so you never know when it's time to put away those winter coats for good. To clear the clutter, opt for an over the door hanger to keep coats out of the way and accessible at the same time, without hogging up precious space in your closet.

Lofted beds may be a pain to get in and out of, especially after a tough gym class but they do have lots of storage space underneath. Rather than shoving old boxes and unwanted clutter under your bed for everyone see, stuff all of it inside a classy little ottoman! And when you have people over, it can even be used as an extra seat.

$85

Whether you're thinking ahead to next year or doing some spring cleaning, there are plenty of ways to decorate your room for both style and functionality.

6 Easy Ways to Cheer Up Your Dorm Room

It's officially spring! Your dorm room is your sanctuary after a long day of classes, RSOs, and studying at the Reg. Add a little cheer to your room with these six easy tricks.

1 - Flowers

What's not to love about fresh flowers? They add color and brightness to any room and bring a smile to your face. Next time you need a quick pick-me-up (and maybe some snacks), swing by Treasure Island and snag a bouquet of inexpensive carnations. For a more long-term solution, colorful succulents are an easy way to add a pop of color to your desk, while fake flowers can be swapped out depending on your mood.

2 - Fairy lights

Fairy, or Christmas, lights are the quintessential way to add personality to any dorm room. In white (or any color of your choosing), they literally brighten the room and create a more stress-free environment. Drape them around your bed for a princess effect, or string them across the ceiling for a more subtle, dreamy touch. Secure them to the walls with small command hooks or even thick clear masking tape.

3 - Photocollage

Dorm room walls are often a drab off-white color. Inject some personality and color by creating a photo collage with the help of common strips or plain double-stick tape. Drugstores like Walgreens allow you to print your favorite Instagram photos for a meta Insta-worthy wall. If you're more old school than that, a collage of images from your favorite magazines is a sure way to make you smile when you head back to after a long day.

4 - Oil diffuser

Scented candles are great, but for the most part against University housing policy. Reed oil diffusers allow you to make your room smell wonderful without the fire hazard. Basically goof-proof, you stick the reeds in the oil and flip them over every few weeks or so, and your room will be delicately scented all day. Soothing lavender and eucalyptus oils are perfect for creating a relaxing and safe space.

5 - Cozy blankets

There's nothing better than coming home after a hard day of exams and discussion sections to Netflix, fuzzy socks and a cozy blanket. A thick plush blanket is not only great for cuddling in after a wintry day, but also adds texture and color to the room.

6 - Wall tapestry

Make your room truly your own with a gorgeous tapestry draped from the walls. A low-effort, high-impact way to personalize your room, a tapestry will not only reduce the draft but also make a bold statement. And if you ever get tired of it, simply swap it out for another one!
