Brands to Know: Ashish

It's official: minimalism is fading, and maximalism is in. Gucci's collections seem to get increasingly more detailed, and while Alessandro Michele is the head of the maximalism trend, he is certainly not the only designer with lavish, extravagant designs. Meet Ashish Gupta, a London-based designer whose flashy brand, Ashish, is taking off all over the world.

I first heard about Ashish when I found out that he was the man behind the rainbow sequined dresses that K-Pop group Red Velvet wore in their music video for their song "Peek-A-Boo." I immediately fell in love with how bold the pieces were and promptly did a bit of research on the brand. Unfortunately, I was met with the high prices that are typical for almost all luxury brands. That being said, I still look to Ashish for inspiration when thinking of more maximalist looks.

Gupta's most recent show during London Fashion Week was also one of my favorites from the city, as it was full of creations that played with contrasting styles and textures. Looks ranged from bright to dark, and sophisticated to ostentatious. While there was a lot going on, my favorite pieces were definitely the tops that parodied credit cards; these, combined with the shopping bags the models carried, serve as commentary regarding people's growing hedonistic and consumerist mindsets.

You can follow Ashish on Instagram at @ashish and shop the brand at a number of sites, including Net-a-porter, SSENSE, and Matches Fashion.
