Paris Couture Week Highlights
Paris Couture Week never really seems to disappoint, with designers taking on particularly ambitious visions this season. Keep reading for our favorite, most elaborate and thought-provoking collections from Paris Couture Week 2017.
1. Dior's forested fantasyland
At Christian Dior, newly christened creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri seemed to draw inspiration from all matters of flora and fauna, with translucent masks and sky-high headpieces lending the fairly pared down silhouettes of her suiting and gowns a certain je ne sais quoi.
2. Maison Margiela merges art and fashion
John Galliano was at his creative best this season, embellishing his collection with all manners of the human form. From evocative portraits constructed entirely of tulle to delicate face masks donning stylized facial features, Margiela rendered the familiar fantastical.
3. Royalty reimagined at Viktor & Rolf
Tulle seems to be having a moment as of late. If you need further convincing, take a look at Valentino's recent ballerina-inspired collections, Giambattista Valli's frequent reliance on the material or it's signature status within Molly Goddard's aesthetic vision. At Viktor & Rolf, the designer duo played up the drama of their regal designs by overlaying expansive tulle skirts with swathes of mismatched fabric.
4. Bombshell glamour at Alexandre Vauthier
Don't expect to see any floor grazing gowns at Alexandre Vauthier couture. The decidedly sleek and sexy collection featured off-the-shoulder blousons, extremely shortened hemlines and asymmetrical looks that lent his nightlife ready looks an unexpectedly athletic feel.
5. Chanel's hall of mirrors
Karl Lagerfeld played it safe this season, elaborating upon many of Chanel's trademark themes: quilted suits, cropped jackets, pastel prints and other staples of classic French style. A standout for the collection was undoubtedly the flapper inspired turn of the final pieces before Lily Rose Depp closed the show in a powdery pink Chanel wedding gown.
