Incorporating High Fashion Trends into Your Winter Wardrobe

While the 2016 runway collections may be brimming with floor grazing couture gowns and pastel fur coats, most ready to wear trends can be easily adopted into your day to day wardrobe when interpreted less literally. 1 - The Choker

Without a doubt, the choker trend has been dominating the high fashion gamut, thanks in part to street style stars like Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid, who don the look for everything from running errands, to making the most of LA's nightlife. What makes this trend a standout is that it started out as a street style sensation before being adopted by runway regulars and fashion industry heavyweights like Raf Simons - whose custom take on the 90's trend dotted the Dior runway. To combat the cold, grab a triangular scarf or kerchief for an updated take on the trend, and for a night out, simply secure a band of ribbon around your neck to elevate any look.

2 - Suede

The 70's are definitely making a comeback, whether you're referencing Gucci's revamped look–which features everything from oversized, tinted sunglasses to flared denim and kaleidoscopic prints–or Balmain's love affair with fringe and disco-ready dresses. As a result, suede has become the new denim, as evidenced by the influx of suede skirts, jackets, boots, purses and more that seem to clutter most online retail sites. Lucky for us, the look isn't limited to varying shades of camel and brown; modern takes incorporate embroidery, cut-outs, updated silhouettes and a multitude of colors that imbue the timeless look with fresh, youthful energy. Invest in a suede jacket as a layering piece that you can wear well into spring or pair a knee grazing suede skirt with tights to keep you warm.
3 - The brooch

Who said your grandma is the only person who can pull off a brooch? The trend is making a surprising comeback, in large part due to Miuccia Prada's eclectic, modern rendering of the timeless accessory for Prada's previous fall/winter collection. Since then, the look has adorned chic ensembles both on and off the runway. For this winter, opt for a large, statement making piece that can pin your wool coat together, embellish your go-to interview blazer or customize your favorite jean jacket. If you're wary the look is too flashy or antiquated, consider a smaller piece that doesn't feature too many jewels.

4 - Culottes
Believe it or not, your culottes don't have to be stowed away as soon as the temperature drops. Layer the unique statement piece over tights or leggings and pair tall boots to transition the look into your winter wardrobe. Also consider looking for the pants in wool, denim or a heavyweight material to keep you warm through Winter Quarter!

5 - The heeled Mary-Jane
Revamped versions of the Mary Jane shoe have been spotted all over the ready-to-wear runways, with quirky colors, ankle straps or a chunky kitten heel elevating the school girl look into a fresh, fashionable andcomfortable option for the modern woman. Pair with colorful or shimmery tights if you're planning on an evening out, or break them out on those rare days when snow doesn't cover the Quad. Still not convinced? Alexa Chung and Leandra Medine were among early adopters of the trend and the look has made appearances on Valentino, Saint Laurent and Prada runways, to name a few.
