Mikhail Gebeyehu is back for his third year with MODA, this time stepping into the role of Executive Designer. Balancing a double major in Math and Computer Science, he somehow finds the time to channel his creativity into some seriously impressive designs. I got to know him better during my own designer interview (which I’m thrilled to say I nailed!) and loved getting a peek into what inspires him and how his creative brain works. Safe to say, MODA’s in great hands this year.

In around two sentences, summarize the major inspiration or influences on your designs?

Mikhail’s designs are all about cool stuff that’s stuck with him over the years—like music, anime, and cartoons he grew up on. Last year, he played with a “prey versus predator” vibe, mixing abstract ideas like a bread and knife, which is pretty wild but totally his style.

What are the major themes of your designs? Is there anything particular that you are trying to convey?

Mikhail doesn’t stick to a specific theme—he’s all about making designs that are bold and hard to ignore. After fabric shopping, he realized how much cool material could push his creativity, shifting his focus to creating striking, eye-catching looks instead of anything too typical.

Anything else you would like to share? about the process, materials, unexpected changes?

This year, Mikhail is experimenting with rust dyeing, using rusty metals to create unique fabric designs. It’s been a challenge sourcing materials—junkyards even think he’s prank calling—but he’s adjusting his approach and picking some up soon to keep the process moving.
