Want to Spice Up Your Look? Consider Constellation Piercings

Winter takes a toll on all aspects of life, but especially fashion. Warmth over looks is my long-lasting winter motto, as it is for most residents of cold, wintery cities. I don’t want to give up a warm parka for a more fashionable coat or snow boots for sleek, heeled Chelsea boots, and I often find myself in a fashion rut. How can I spice up my look without sacrificing on comfort?

That’s where constellation piercings come in. Constellation piercings, or curated ears, are groups of piercings placed in different points throughout your ear to create a put-together, constellation-like ear look. They became a popular concept a few years ago, with piercing places opening up to specialize specifically on this trend. No two constellation piercings are exactly the same, and it’s an easy look to make personal and unique to one’s own personality. They usually consist of lobe, helix/anti-helix, and flat piercings, but can be easily customized to fit your comfort level.

Unlike more drastic look makeovers (like haircuts or tattoos), piercings are easy to switch up—once they’re healed, of course. Changing a lobe piercing from a dainty to a thicker hoop can completely change your vibe. Even more subtle exchanges, like changing a helix piercing from a flat stud to a small hoop, can really effect the mood you give off. You can switch from gold to silver, shiny to matte, monochrome to multi-colored. These are all small changes that require minimal effort, while still providing a result.

It’s important to go to a piercing place that you can trust to do a good job. Poor placement of piercings can effect where the rest can go, and it’s really disappointing to not be able to fit in a third lobe piercing, for example, because your second is too far from your first. Keep in mind that needles are better than piercing guns, both for the safety of your cartilage and for keeping bacteria away from your ears, and that you might need to splurge a bit to find a piercing studio you feel comfortable with. Easy ways to do research are to start with a Yelp search and then look through the studio’s Instagram profile to see their past work!

Whether you go in with a plan or rely on your piercer for creative advice, get ready to truly change your look. My ears feel naked without at least three pairs of earrings on, and that’s a really integral part of the way I present myself every day. Fun or bold earrings can instantly add pizzaz to your winter look and help you stand out in the sea of dark grey parkas.
