Brands to Know: Lemaire

Lemaire exudes luxury without being too gaudy or excessive. The brand consistently strikes the sweet balance between muted and amplified, producing clothes that are well-structured and a distinct style that is meant to stand the test of time and ephemeral trends.

The brand, started in 1990 by Christophe Lemaire, has experienced several shifts before settling on this low-key luxury aesthetic. Lemaire has held posts as companies like Lacoste and Hermès, but returned to his namesake brand in 2014. He currently holds the title of co-designer of Lemaire, with his design and life partner Sarah Linh Tran (who is a fashion icon in her own right).

“...in our relationship to clothes, it’s not necessarily what you show to the outside world, but how you feel in the clothes which matters.”
— Christophe Lemaire

The duo have achieved a cult following for their brand’s seemingly simplistic, but masterfully crafted pieces. Since starting Lemaire, and especially after Christophe returned to the brand full-time, the brand has always focused on the craft of clothes-making and emphasized the use of quality materials. Lemaire pieces are known for following a neutral color palette, making them timeless. Inspired by Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto, Lemaire seeks to have a sense of functionality fused with sensuality in their clothing. As a long-time admirer of the brand and its ethos, I can reassure the designers that the brand is achieving exactly that and more.
