The Blaschka dress

There’s a lot I could say about Iris van Herpen—she’s my favorite designer and someone who pushes the future of haute couture forward—but an intensive study of her textile prowess is for another post. The fashion house’s official Instagram @irisvanherpen is a treasure trove of fantastical designs and up close shots of the mind blowing craftsmanship behind her pieces.

On Iris van Herpen’s page, you’ll find her latest projects, features, and behind-the-scenes candids. Her dresses are the stuff dreams are made of—they’re ethereal, wildly (almost painfully) intricate, cutting-edge (technologically), and based on themes such as escapism and creation. They can be almost perceptually confusing, and so captions help. A sample:

“The #irisvanherpen #seijaku dress (2016) is made from over a thousand hand-blown glass bubbles, moulded in transparent silicone liquid, creating bioluminescence around the body” (360º video here)

“Detail shot of the #irisvanherpen #betweenthelines Mimicry dress, made from laser-cut leather and hand-plissed black transparent organza that is sculptured with a soft boning into spherical shapes”

“The #irisvanherpen #betweenthelines Blaschka dress, made from a soft 3D hand-casted transparent PU, that is hand-painted through injection molding, and lined with a fine silk tulle”
